Victoria Azarenka Biography

Victoria Azarenka is a Belarussian professional tennis player who is the current World No. 1. She become the first Belarussian player to win a Grand Slam in singles after her victory at the 2012 Australian Open. Defending her Australian Open crown in 2013, winning the singles bronze medal and mixed doubles gold medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, two mixed doubles Grand Slam titles - the 2007 US Open and the 2008 French Open - are a few other bright feathers in her illustrious hat. Azarenka debuted on the International Tennis Federation (ITF) junior tour in November 2003 in Israel, and emerged with a doubles title to her credit. In 2005, she won two junior Grand Slams: the Australian and US championships. She ended the season as the junior world no. 1 and was named the 2005 World Champion by the ITF. In 2007 she captured the US Open mixed doubles title along with Max Mirnyi. The following year she teamed with American Bob Bryan to win the mixed doubles title at the French Open. Azarenka began the year 2009 with a victory at the Brisbane International which was her first WTA career title. Her next big break came at the 2009 Sony Ericsson Open in Miami, where she defeated Serena Williams in the final to claim the title. In 2012, Azarenka recorded her first Grand Slam singles title and became the world no. 1 in the same match. At the 2013 Australian Open, she faced Li Na in the final and defeated her, thus retaining her World No. 1 rank.
