Dodger Stadium History/ Dodger Stadium Construction and Cost

Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum served as the home ballpark for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 1958 to 1961. However, in 1962, the Dodgers Stadium opened and became the new stadium for the MLB team. The construction of Dodger Stadium was initiated in the early 1960s after the Los Angeles Dodgers relocated from Brooklyn, New York.

The ceremony for Dodger Stadium took place on September 17, 1959. The construction process was impressive, as the stadium was completed in less than three years. On April 10, 1962, the stadium had its official opening, with the Dodgers playing their first game against the Cincinnati Reds. The Dodgers won in the inaugural game, in front of over 52,000 fans.

The architectural design of Dodger Stadium was of architect Emil Praeger, who collaborated with engineering firm W.A. Simpson & Associates. The stadium was constructed at a cost of $23 million, which, accounting for inflation, would amount to approximately $223 million in 2020 dollars.

Dodger Stadium Capacity

Dodger Stadium, as of 2024, has a seating capacity of 56,000. This capacity is in accordance with the stadium's conditional-use permit, which restricts the maximum number of seats to 56,000. The Dodger Stadium has never increased its seating capacity, making it the only current MLB park, up until 2005, that has not done so.

Despite its static seating capacity, Dodger Stadium has seen record-breaking attendance numbers. The highest attendance recorded at the stadium was on April 13, 2009, during the Dodgers' Home Opener. A whopping 57,099 fans filled the stands.
