Since its inception in 2008, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed several top batting performances by several exceptional players from around the world. To date, 101 centuries have been scored in the competition's history.

Over the years, the landmark three-figure mark has become a norm in the competition, primarily due to better pitches and a massive increase in the quality of batsmanship over the years.

Several world-class players such as Michael Hussey, Virat Kohli, Chris Gayle, AB de Villiers, Shane Watson, David Warner, Sachin Tendulkar, and Adam Gilchrist, amongst several others, have reached this landmark figure in the competition.

While there have been several players who have scored just one century in the competition and were unable to repeat the feat, there have been many who have repeatedly breached the three-figure mark in an innings.

On that note, let us take a look at three players who have scored the most number of centuries in IPL history:

#1 Virat Kohli (RCB)

Virat Kohli, the only player in the competition's history to only play for only one franchise, has scored a total of seven centuries in the IPL. He has scored two centuries against the Gujarat Lions (GL), one against the Rising Pune Supergiants (RPS), one against the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), one against the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), one against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), and one against the Gujarat Titans (GT).

Here's a breakdown of Kohii's IPL centuries:

  1. Virat Kohli (100* vs GL), 2016
  2. Virat Kohli (108* vs RPS), 2016
  3. Virat Kohli (109 vs GL), 2016
  4. Virat Kohli (113 vs KXIP), 2016
  5. Virat Kohli (100 vs KKR), 2019
  6. Virat Kohli (100 vs SRH), 2023
  7. Virat Kohli (101* vs GT), 2023

Kohli, the highest run-scorer in the history of the competition, has scored 7263 runs in 229 innings at an average of 37.25 and a strike rate of 130.02. He broke Chris Gayle's long-standing record of six IPL centuries with a second consecutive hundred against Gujarat Titans on Sunday, May 21.

Kohli had scored the joint-highest number of hundreds (4) and runs (973) in a single season in 2016, taking his side to the final. However, despite his heroics, the much-coveted IPL trophy still eludes him.

#2 Chris Gayle (KKR, RCB and PBKS)

The 'Universe Boss' has been one of the most entertaining players in the tournament's history. Chris Gayle has scored one century against KKR, two against KXIP, one against Pune Warriors (PWI), one against SRH, and one against Delhi Daredevils (DD). 5 out of his six centuries came for RCB while one game for PBKS.

Here's a breakdown of Gayle's IPL centuries:

  1. Chris Gayle (102* vs KKR), 2011
  2. Chris Gayle (107 vs KXIP), 2011
  3. Chris Gayle (128* vs DD), 2012
  4. Chris Gayle (175* vs PWI), 2013
  5. Chris Gayle (117 vs KXIP), 2015
  6. Chris Gayle (104* vs SRH), 2018

In 141 innings, Gayle has scored 4965 runs at an average of 39.72 and a strike rate of 148.96. Gayle, the eighth-highest run-scorer in the history of the competition, has scored the fastest hundred — in 30 balls against the PWI in 2013 — in the history of the competition.

Gayle also holds the record for the highest individual score (175* runs off 66 balls) in IPL history. He won the Orange Cap twice in IPL history — 2011 and 2012.

#3 Jos Butler (MI and RR)

Jos Butler has been one of the pillars of Rajasthan Royals' batting line-up since joining them. Over the years, he has been the most consistent players for RR and has been continuously putting in exceptional performances for the franchise.

One of the best white-ball batters in the world, Butler has scored five centuries in his IPL career so far — once each against SRH, Mumbai Indians (MI), KKR, Delhi Capitals (DC) and RCB.

Here's a breakdown of Buttler's IPL centuries:

  1. Jos Butler (124 vs SRH), 2021
  2. Jos Butler (100 vs MI), 2022

He won the Orange Cap in 2022 and scored the joint-highest number of centuries (4) in a single season. He has scored the second-highest runs in a single season with 863 runs, after Virat Kohli's record 973-run 2016 season.
