IPL 2018: Three batsmen with 10+ sixes in an innings without a century

<p>
Gayle has been involved in four instances where hit more than 10 sixes and yet didn't score a ton

We're already halfway into IPL 2018 and we have witnessed some thrilling encounters. From 200+ totals being chased down with ease to low scores being defended quite well.

From top class innings to game-changing spells. The IPL has had it all this season and it promises to get better in the coming days.

In just 27 odd games, we have encountered some swashbuckling knocks by some of the big names in world cricket.

With players like Chris Gayle, Shane Watson and AB De Villiers, there's sure to be some fireworks. But even young players like Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson and Prithvi Shaw have proved their mettle in the shortest format of the game with some serious ball striking this season.

Hitting sixes is no easy task but nowadays players pack a punch and hit them with such fluency.

The IPL this year has come across three masterclass innings where 10+ sixes were hit by an individual batsman. 10+ sixes?

That's surely happened in the past, right? Yes, it has. In the previous ten editions of the IPL, we have seen nine such instances where 10+ sixes were hit.

Gayle alone was involved in four of those. But in the past, those sensational innings yielded in the batsmen making a hundred.

These three innings didn't and all of them happened in this season.

Let's take a look at the three innings where 10+ sixes were hit by a single player without ending up with a century.

#1 Andre Russell - 88 off 36 (11 sixes)

Russell was brutal against CSK bowlers

The man from Jamaica has been a vital cog in this Kolkata Knight Riders’ setup. Whenever needed, he comes out all guns blazing and can win you games single-handedly. Well, he almost pulled off a win for KKR at the Chepauk a couple of weeks back.

Batting first, KKR were reeling at 89 for five and the end of 10 overs. It didn't look good for them but Russell walked in at No.7 believing he could take his team to a respectable score. What transpired thereafter was a pure masterclass.

He walloped the bowlers to all parts of the ground and stunned all the CSK supporters who came to see their team play after a two-year gap.

The big hits kept coming in and it never looked like stopping. Russell ended up with an unbeaten 88 off just 36 balls which were studded with 11 humongous sixes and one four. In the end, his efforts went in vain as CSK pulled off a sensational win.

#2 Sanju Samson - 92 off 45 (10 sixes)

Samson guided Rajasthan to a comfortable win over RCB

The Chinnaswamy has always lived up to its reputation of being a ground with loads of runs. The RCB vs RR game was no better.

With Rahane, Stokes and Buttler struggling to find form, it was young Samson who was burdened with the responsibility to score runs for his team.

Samson walked in at three with Rajasthan on 49 for 1 in the sixth over and began his innings with some flawless strokes.

Even the likes of Chris Woakes and Umesh Yadav were unable to stop the young Keralite, who continued to hit sixes with such ease.

The flicks, the pulls, the cuts and cover drives, he showed it all in his breathtaking unbeaten knock of 92 off just 45 balls.

His star-studded innings consisted of 10 perfectly hit sixes and two fours. It was an innings which RCB couldn't recover from as RR won the game with a comfortable 19 runs.

#3 Shreyas Iyer - 93 off 40 (10 sixes)

It was Iyer's first game as captain of Delhi

Delhi Daredevils weren't having a good season and the captain Gambhir decided to hand over the reigns to young Iyer, who had been scoring the runs for Delhi.

KKR were in town and young Iyer went out to lead Delhi for the very first time. There was immense pressure on the young lad but that didn't make him from making brave decisions. He promoted himself to number three and that worked wonders for Delhi.

He began to find the gaps and slowly but gradually he picked up and began dispatching a hapless KKR bowling unit to all parts of the Feroz Shah Kotla.

He collected a massive 29 runs of the final over to help Delhi to an impressive 219 which was well defended by his bowlers.

Iyer remained unbeaten on 93 off just 40 deliveries. His innings was studded with three fours and 10 massive sixes. It was a dream captaincy debut for young Iyer who not only got Delhi's campaign back on track but also ended up with the man of the match award for his scintillating strokeplay.
