The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2020) is all set to get underway on 29 March in Mumbai. The final of the tournament will also be held at the home of Mumbai Indians, at the Wankhede Stadium on 24 May.

The tournament will be different this time in the sense that there will be an All Stars game three days prior to the beginning of the main event. Also, a dedicated umpire will monitor no-balls after the massive controversy that erupted over Lasith Malinga’s missed no-ball in last year’s match between Mumbai Indians and Royal Challengers Bangalore.

Over the years, the IPL has witnessed some impressive captaincy from the leaders of the franchises as they had led their teams to glory, some from rather challenging circumstances. In this feature, we take a look at the top 5 IPL captains with the best win percentage (minimum of 70 matches).

#5 Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has an incredible record as India's captain, but he has somehow failed to replicate that at the IPL level. Kohli has captained Royal Challengers Bangalore in every edition starting from 2013, but the franchise has not been able to lift the title even once.

The closest RCB have come to winning the IPL under Kohli was in 2016, when they made it to the final. But they went down to Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight runs in a high-scoring final. Kohli amassed a record 973 runs in that edition with four hundreds and seven fifties. He also hit 54 from 35 in the final, but it wasn’t enough for RCB to lift the title.

Overall, Kohli has led RCB in 110 matches, out of which they have won 49 and lost 55 (with two ties and four no-results) - which gives Kohli a win percentage of 47.11.

#4 Adam Gilchrist

Former dashing Australian opener Adam Gilchrist had an attacking game perfectly suited to the IPL. However, he made an impression as a captain as well.

Gilchrist led Deccan Chargers to victory in the 2009 edition in South Africa. This, after the Chargers had finished last in the inaugural edition in 2008.

Gilchrist led from the front with 495 runs and 18 dismissals, and was adjudged player of the series. He was the second highest run-scorer in that season.

The wicket-keeper batsman later also went on to captain Kings XI Punjab.

The Aussie was IPL captain in a total of 74 matches, winning 35 and losing 39. He finished with a win percentage of 47.29.

#3 Gautam Gambhir

For a long time Kolkata Knight Riders were an under-performing team despite having some of the biggest names in their ranks. It wasn’t until Gautam Gambhir took over the reins as captain that KKR achieved a level of consistency.

Under the left-handed Gambhir, KKR emerged as IPL champions in 2012 and again in 2014. Gambhir’s aggressive captaincy was seen as one of the major reasons behind the turnaround in KKR’s fortunes.

As player, he led from the front in 2012 with 590 runs, and he was also the leading run-getter in the season. In 2014, he contributed 335 runs in 16 matches.

Gambhir also captained Delhi in the IPL, but failed to taste similar success. Overall, Gambhir played a total of 129 matches as captain. He won 71 and lost 57 to finish with a win percentage of 55.46.

#2 Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is undoubtedly the IPL’s most successful captain, having led Mumbai Indians to a record four titles. However, when it comes to winning percentage, he is at number two.

Rohit has so far captained MI in 104 matches, out of which Mumbai have won 60 and lost 42, giving him a win percentage of 58.82.

Under Rohit, Mumbai have won IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019. Looking at the Mumbai batsman’s performance in the victorious seasons, he amassed 538 runs in 2013, 482 in 2015, 333 in 2017 and 405 in 2019.

Rohit’s record clearly demonstrates that he has been consistency personified in the tournament. His calm and shrewd captaincy has come in for plenty of praise.

#1 MS Dhoni

Not surprisingly, former India captain and Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni tops the list. With Dhoni in charge, CSK have lifted the IPL trophy thrice -- in 2010, 2011 and 2018. The last win saw CSK make a triumphant return to the tournament after serving a two-year suspension.

Under Dhoni, CSK have achieved some incredible feats. They are the only franchise in IPL history to make it to the playoffs every time they have featured in the tournament. Also, they hold the record for having made the most IPL finals - 8. It is another matter though that they ended up losing five of the summit clashes.

Looking at his performance in CSK’s winning years, Dhoni scored 287 runs in 13 games to go with five catches and six stumpings in 2010, and 392 runs in 16 games in 2011, apart from five catches and as many stumpings. In 2018, Dhoni contributed 455 runs in 16 games along with 11 catches and three stumpings.

Dhoni also briefly captained Rising Pune Supergiant when CSK were suspended. He has played 174 games as captain, and has the best win percentage of 60.11 with 104 victories and 69 losses.
