Top 5 highest IPL match aggregates

The format of T20s literally revolutionised the game of cricket as scores were achieved that were unimaginable a decade ago. The power hitters of the modern era, shorter boundaries, and the big bats have all made it possible for the teams to score huge totals.

IPL has had its fair share of run feasts since its inception in the year 2008. There have been numerous occasions when the team batting first scored over 200 and the chasing team matched it. Here are five such occasions that contributed to the highest match aggregates.

#5 MI vs RCB in 2015: 431 runs

It was the 46^th match of the 8^th season when the Mumbai Indians played host to the Royal Challengers Bangalore on May 10^th, 2015. RCB batted first after winning the toss and lost Chris Gayle early. Virat Kohli and Ab de Villiers then put up a masterclass at the Wankhede and added 215 runs for the second wicket and ensured no further loss.

Kohli scored 82 off 50 balls with 6 fours and 4 sixes but de Villiers was the star of the show as he scored a magnificent 133 off just 59 balls that took the score to a massive 235.

MI’s innings was marred by wickets falling at regular intervals. They were kept in the hunt for a while by Lendl Simmons and Kieron Pollard’s partnership of 70 runs for the third wicket. But there was no one else who supported and as a result, they were halted at 196 handing RCB a victory by 39 runs.

#4 DC vs RR in 2008: 431 runs

Symonds scored a century for the Deccan Chargers

Hyderabad was the venue on April 24^th, 2008 when the Rajasthan Royals visited the Deccan Chargers. After losing the toss, DC were put in to bat first and suffered a couple of quick setbacks. Andrew Symonds, who came in to bat at number 4, took it upon himself to take them to a substantial score.

He notched up a brilliant unbeaten 117 off just 53 balls with 11 fours and 7 sixes that meant DC put up a huge total of 214 on the board.

RR despite losing a wicket in the third over were kept in the game by a blistering partnership of 98 runs for the second wicket between Graeme Smith and Yusuf Pathan. The Indian batsman scored 61 off only 28 balls and the South African got 71 off 45.

A series of wickets followed and the match hung in the balance. It was down to the skipper, Shane Warne, to take them home, and he played a cameo of 22 off 9 balls to take his side to victory.

#3 DD vs KXIP in 2011: 433 runs

Warner and Sehwag put on a 146-run partnership

The Delhi Daredevils played host to Kings XI Punjab on April 23^rd, 2011 in the 26^th match of the season. DD batted first after winning the toss and the most explosive openers of that time – David Warner and Virender Sehwag, got off to a destructive start.

Warner amassed 77 off 48 balls with Sehwag scoring as many runs off just 35 balls as the duo shared a stand of 146 runs. Some late hitting from the middle order handed them a humongous score of 231.

Punjab’s chase was bolstered by Adam Gilchrist and Shaun Marsh as they added 72 runs for the second wicket. Marsh carried on to make 95 off 46 balls with 6 fours and 6 sixes but due to lack of support, his team ended up with 202 runs for six wickets as DD won by 29 runs.

#2 KXIP vs CSK in 2008: 447 runs

Hussey scored a century to take CSK past 200

In the second match of the season on April 19^th, 2008, the Kings XI Punjab hosted the Chennai Super Kings. CSK, after winning the toss, lost the openers early. Michael Hussey who batted at number 3 scored an excellent 116 off just 54 balls with 8 fours and 9 sixes.

The late cameos from Suresh Raina and Subramaniam Badrinath boosted the score to a massive 240.

Punjab were in the game with 2 half-century partnerships at the top. James Hopes scored 71 off just 33 balls and Sangakkara made 54 off 33 balls. They lost just 4 wickets in the innings but failed to keep up with the required run-rate and were halted at 207.

#1 CSK vs RR in 2010: 469 runs

Vijay and Hayden gave CSK a good start

The Rajasthan Royals were the visitors for Chennai Super Kings on April 3^rd, 2010 in the 32^nd match of the season. Batting first after winning the toss, CSK got off to a blazing start with Murali Vijay and Matthew Hayden adding 62 runs for the first wicket.

Vijay went on to achieve a superb 127 off only 56 balls including 8 fours and 11 sixes. Albie Morkel’s quickfire 62 took them to a colossal score of 246 runs at the end of 20 overs.

The Royals replied back strongly with the openers Michael Lumb and Naman Ojha putting up a stand of 69 runs. Ojha carried on to make an unbeaten 94 off 55 balls who was ably supported by Shane Watson who scored 60 off 25. The scoreboard pressure then got to them and they managed 223 runs and fell short by 23 runs.
