Persona 5: The Phantom X is a free-to-play spin-off to fan-favorite Persona 5 series, developed by Black Wings Game Studio with supervision from Atlus and Sega. The game brings the iconic Persona experience to mobile devices and PC while offering a fresh story, new characters, and familiar mechanics wrapped in a stylish aesthetic.
Plot
The story begins with a dream that mirrors a famous scene from Persona 5, where Joker is escaping Niijima’s Palace. During the escape, he’s suddenly attacked by a mysterious hooded figure. A brief fight follows, ending with Joker breaking the figure’s mask to reveal the protagonist of The Phantom X, who then shoots Joker. The protagonist jolts awake, realizing it was only a nightmare. On his way to school, a mysterious owl starts following him. Later, while dozing off in class, the protagonist finds himself in the Velvet Room, greeted by Igor and a new assistant named Merope, who hint at his latent potential.
Back in the real world, things quickly spiral as the protagonist feels the effects of his desires being drained. Helpless and unable to act during troubling moments, he notices a strange app called Metaverse Navigator on his phone. The owl introduces itself as Lufel and guides him into the Metaverse. There, after fending off Shadows, the protagonist awakens his Persona for the first time. With his newfound power and Lufel’s guidance, he decides to form a new band of Phantom Thieves to reclaim the stolen desires plaguing society and restore balance.
Gameplay
The Phantom X sticks to the core Persona mechanics, which is a mix of turn-based combat and life simulation. Players attend school, build relationships, work part-time jobs, and manage their daily life to boost character stats. Meanwhile, they explore Palaces and Mementos at night to battle Shadows, collect Personas, and complete missions.
The game introduces a gacha system where players can summon additional Personas and characters, adding a live-service element. Online multiplayer features like co-op challenges and guilds expand the experience beyond the single-player storyline, while the core mechanics still focus on exploiting enemy weaknesses and managing Persona fusions.
Platform
The game is available on Android, iOS, and Windows PC via Steam. It supports cross-save, allowing players to switch between mobile and PC without losing progress. As of now, there are no reports about its availability on consoles like PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, or Nintendo Switch 2.
