The 88th edition of the Masters tournament will be held from April 8 to 14, 2024, at the Augusta National Golf Club, Georgia, U.S. The first two days of the event will be practice rounds, followed by the infamous par-3 contest on April 10, which is also widely regarded as the cursed event, because whoever wins this, never wins the Masters event. It could be a superstition too, but nobody has won both in the past 89 years. The first round will commence on April 11 until April 14, followed by the presentation ceremony.

The Masters Tournament Purse Details and Purse Breakdown Structure

The Masters purse structure is a system that decides how much money is given out as prizes in golf tournaments. The format is determined by how many holes each competitor has completed at the start of the tournament. Each of the first four rounds, or one point each, is worth one, while the final round is worth three.

A typical Masters purse structure consists of four main parts: the Stein, the Kette, the Brust, and the Schwanz. The Stein is the central, cylindrical part of the purse, and it is where the coins are stored. To close the purse, a chain called the Kette is wrapped around the Stein. The Brust, which covers the Stein, is a flap that is typically adorned with artwork or initials. The tassel that hangs from the bottom of the bag and is called the "Schwanz'' is used to open it.

The Masters Tournament Purse history

In 1934, the first Masters tournament took place; the prize pool then was $6000, with a winner's share of $1500. In 1989, the event's purse reached a total of $1 million; however, the winner's share of $1 million came in 2001. The purse has steadily increased, reaching a record-breaking $18 million in 2023.

Following World War II, Herman Keiser earned $2,500 when the Masters returned in 1946. Other payout records were set by Arnold Palmer in 1958, when he won $11,250—the first time the winner's share had surpassed $10,000.

The first time the winner's share crossed $20,000 was in 1961 by Gary Player. Fuzzy Zoeller's win in 1979 marked the first time the winner's share had reached $50,000, while Ben Crenshaw's $108,000 win in 1984 marked the first six-figure payout.

The purse of the Masters grows each year, so Bernhard Langer won $306,000 in 1993; Nick Faldo won $200,000 in 1989; Faldo won $450,000 in 1996; and Mark O'Meara received the first half-million payment in 1998, earning $576,000 in winner's share.

Tiger Woods cashed in on the following two significant payout milestones: The first million-dollar check, 1.008 million, was given to him in 2001, while the first multi-million-dollar check, 2.07 million, came in 2019. Jon Rahm collected $3.24 million in 2023.
