3 quarterbacks who could win their first NFL MVP award in the 2023 season

It's pretty much guaranteed that a quarterback will win the 2023-2024 NFL MVP award.

The last non-quarterback to win the award was running back Adrian Peterson, who did so back in 2012 with the Minnesota Vikings.

Patrick Mahomes won MVP last season, but it wasn't his first time. The Kansas City Chiefs superstar took home the award in 2018 as well during his first year as a starter. The 2023-24 MVP winner will likely be a first-time winner, unless it's Mahomes again or Aaron Rodgers manages to win his fifth.

Here are three quarterbacks who could pick up the award next season.

#1. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills

The Buffalo Bills traded up to select Josh Allen with the the seventh overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. It clearly turned out to be one of the best moves the franchise has ever made.

Allen has blossomed into one of the league's top signal-callers and has led Buffalo to an AFC East title in each of the past three seasons. It wouldn't be surprising if he and the Bills put together a fantastic 2023 season and he wins his first-ever MVP award.

#2. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals

Several quarterbacks who were drafted No. 1 overall have wound up becoming huge busts. That definitely hasn't been the case for Joe Burrow so far.

After going down with a season-ending knee injury as a rookie, the top pick in the 2020 draft powered the Cincinnati Bengals to a Super Bowl appearance in his second year.

Burrow's Bengals had a great 2022 campaign as well, reaching the AFC Championship game despite losing to Mahomes and the Chiefs. Mahomes can't win the MVP every year and "Joe Cool" could take home the award in 2023.

#3. Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia Eagles

What a major surprise Jalen Hurts has been since entering the league three years ago. The second-round pick went from being Carson Wentz' backup as a rookie to an elite quarterback in 2022.

Last season, Hurts threw for 3,701 yards, 22 touchdowns and only six interceptions. He also ran for 760 yards and 13 touchdowns. More importantly, he took the Philadelphia Eagles all the way to Super Bowl LVII. That's not bad at all for a former backup.

Hurts finished second in MVP voting last season, but he could certainly take home the award in 2023.
