Cam Newton and Deshaun Watson both have their haters. Many hold a grudge against the former Panthers quarterback due to his showboating antics on the field. Others despise him for how he walked out of the press conference at Super Bowl 50.

Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson has a horde of his own detractors stemming from dozens of allegations of sexual misconduct in massage rooms. Both demographics of haters appeared to be separate, but now have a reason to join forces against the quarterbacks after Newton's most recent comments about Watson.

"I've grown to admire the person, the athlete that he is... Going through a lot of turmoil, but I believe that's behind him."

NFL fans swarmed the post, torching the former quarterback for standing with Deshaun Watson:

Some braced for the quarterback's alleged sordid past to immediately melt away after getting back on the gridiron. Based on the comments made on Twitter above, those predictions have been proven wrong. The allegation dump is now two years old, as most consider early 2021 to be the start of the controversy.

When it happened, the quarterback was originally coming off a 4-12 season, the worst of his career despite throwing for more touchdowns than he had ever before. Slowly over the next year, his future became murkier by the day. At one point, his freedom was in jeopardy.

However, Watson eventually escaped legal recourse at the criminal level. Instead, civil lawsuits continued to follow him. That said, the quarterback also saw a change in residency as he was traded from the Houston Texans to the Cleveland Browns and earned the first fully guaranteed quarterback contract in NFL history.

It took skipping the 2021 season, but by 2022, he was ready to play football again. That said, the NFL still had not had their say. They eventually settled on suspending the quarterback for about half the season, setting up a bizarre campaign for the Browns.

In their mind, the Browns just needed to survive with Jacoby Brissett and then, once Deshaun Watson's suspension was up, he could come in and save the day. It didn't quite work that way, as Brissett failed to keep the team afloat enough to let the quarterback knock off the rust he had accrued during his missed 2021 season.

Now, as 2023 sits quietly in the distance, viewers sit by waiting to see if a full offseason will get the team to where they were at the height of the Baker Mayfield era.
