The San Francisco 49ers have a long history of vying for the Lombardi Trophy. They have participated in seven Super Bowls: 2019, 2012, 1994, 1989,1988, 1984, and 1981.

Seven appearances rank sixth in league history, after the New England Patriots (11), Pittsburgh Steelers (eight), Dallas Cowboys (eight) and Denver Broncos (eight). In their seven appearances, the 49ers had a 5-2 record.

San Francisco won five Super Bowls (1981, 1984, 1988, 1989, and 1994) during an unprecedented eight-year run. The team did not lose a Super Bowl until February 3, 2013, when they were defeated 34-31 by the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII.

If the 49ers win another Super Bowl, they will be tied with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots for the most Super Bowl victories in history.

In the 2019 season, they played against the Green Bay Packers in the NFC Championship and won the game by 37-20. They made it to the Super Bowl but were defeated by the Kansas City Chiefs 31-20.

Last season, the 49ers again reached the NFC championship but suffered a 20-17 loss against the Los Angeles Rams.
