The San Francisco 49ers gave up a lot of draft assets to draft Trey Lance in the 2021 NFL Draft. However, the 49ers quarterback hasn't been able to properly prove himself yet in the league.
After sitting behind Jimmy Garoppolo in his rookie season, Lance was handed the starting quarterback role ahead of the 2022 season. Unfortunately, Lance suffered a season-ending injury in the second game of the season.
Jimmy Garoppolo took over for Lance, who later got hurt as well, paving the way for Brock Purdy to prove his worth to the team. Purdy impressed during his rookie season, and it appears that the starting quarterback position is his to lose heading into next season.

As per Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the San Francisco 49ers tilt in favor of Purdy being the starting quarterback rather than Trey Lance or Sam Darnold. Here's what he said:
"I do believe the 49ers’ brass thinks Purdy’s capable of giving them the highest level of quarterback play they’ve had since Kyle Shanahan arrived in 2017."
"That doesn’t mean he’s there yet, of course." Breer said, "But that they’re hanging his name first on the depth chart, and are willing to do it, even with his medical situation, is very much indicative of where they stand."
Brock Purdy is expected to be fit by the time next season starts, but he might miss some amount of time during the OTAs and training camps. As a result, it will be interesting to see how the situation rolls out in San Francisco in the coming months.
Trey Lance will be fully healthy for OTAs
Trey Lance did end up missing the entire season due to the injury he suffered against the Seattle Seahawks in the second game of the season. Nevertheless, he is expected to be fully healthy come OTAs and it will help him a lot.
If Lance is to win the starting quarterback job for the 49ers he needs to show up in the time leading up to next season and remain healthy. He has a very high ceiling, which is why the 49ers gave up a lot to draft him. It would be intriguing to see if Lance can silence his detractors and prove that he is the 49ers' future quarterback.
