Dak Prescott's new OC reveals team may not “want to run the damn ball” after all

Brian Schottenheimer reveals plan for Dak Prescott's offense for Cowboys in 2023

Dak Prescott will have to deal with major changes to the Dallas Cowboys' offensive scheme during the 2023 NFL season. His offensive coordinator Kellen Moore was fired during the offseason and was replaced by Brian Schottenheimer.

In a corresponding move, the Cowboys announced that head coach Mike McCarthy will be the play-caller for the upcoming season. The philosophical changes to their design is in an effort to get over the hump of being annual playoff competitors and transform into a legitimate Super Bowl contender.

Schottenheimer's plan for the Cowboys' offense in his new position was outlined in a recent report:

"When new Cowboys offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer was asked about the type of offense to expect in Dallas in 2023, he said, 'I want us to be able to play fast.'
"Acknowledging Mike McCarthy will be the play-caller and his job will be to 'prepare guys and prepare the staff,' Schottenheimer talked about speed and physicality on offense and how he just wants to stack wins."

The report continued:

"His statements fell in line with much of what McCarthy has said throughout the offseason. A big reason McCarthy wanted to take over as play-caller was his focus on the big picture. He wanted to score points but also to help his defense. It was a criticism he had of former OC Kellen Moore and something he aims to fix in 2023.
"'I’ve been where Kellen has been,' McCarthy famously said earlier in the offseason. 'Kellen wants to light the scoreboard up but I want to run the damn ball so I can rest my defense.'"

Playing "fast" will be nothing new for Dak Prescott, as the Cowboys' offense has ranked in the top-two in plays run per minute during each of the past three consecutive seasons.

They will apparently move forward with a more balanced approach, as they claim to aim their focus on running the ball more often. Dak Prescott will be forced to navigate all of these changes, while also working with a new supporting cast of players.

The Dallas Cowboys have made a few bold offensive moves leading up to the 2023 NFL season. They released workhorse running back Ezekiel Elliot, replacing him Ronald Jones during the free agency period and Deuce Vaughn in the 2023 NFL Draft.

The Cowboys also parted ways with Dalton Schultz, one of Dak Prescott's favorite targets. They replaced him with Luke Schoonmaker in the draft, as well as trading for Brandin Cooks. This significantly improves their wide receivers, while their tight end position is much more of a question mark.
