After signing for a single year and just a $9 million salary with the Houston Texans, NFL fans are calling into question how good Dalton Schultz is. He bet on himself by turning down a $36 million contract from the Dallas Cowboys after a good season. His bet did not pay off.

His ratings have now been revealed in the upcoming Madden 23. The game isn't out just yet, but the team and player overalls are.

That said, is Dalton Schultz any good?

Madden isn't always the most trustworthy source for how good a player is. They're pretty accurate at times, but their rating system is far from comprehensive and is certainly not perfect.

Nevertheless, in Madden 23, Schultz is considered a possession tight end. That's his archetype. His overall rating is 83, which is pretty solid for a tight end. Here's how it breaks down:

  • 83 overall
  • 85 general
  • 11 passing
  • 77 receiving
  • 62 ball carrying
  • 20 defense
  • 63 blocking
  • 23 kicking

Put all that together (and more, because that's not a complete list of the attributes available, just one available for now) and what comes out is an 83 overall tight end.

Dalton Schultz is by many standards an underrated TE

Schultz came into his own as a playmaker for the Cowboys last year, which is why he wanted to test the free agent market. He may have thought he'd get paid like a 90 overall but NFL teams didn't see it that way.

The Houston Texans are more than likely going to draft a quarterback second overall. Whether it will be Anthony Richardson, Bryce Young or CJ Stroud remains to be seen.

Either way, the team needs reliable pass-catchers for its new quarterback. Schultz is just that, so he's a good signing for the team. He'll hope to reset his value and try again in the next free agency period.
