Saquon Barkley continued to add to his impressive highlight reel as a Philadelphia Eagle with another dazzling play.
In the third quarter of his team's Sunday Night Football clash against the Los Angeles Rams at SoFi Stadium, the running back found a hole in the home team's defensive line, made a shifty move to evade the secondary, before taking the ball in the endzone for his ninth rushing touchdown of the season.
As much joy as Barkley's heroics bring to Eagles fans, it pales in comparison to the misery it causes for New York Giants fans, who are still in disbelief that the team let him walk as a free agent in the offseason. As has become the norm after every exceptional play the veteran makes, they demanded that the franchise part ways with general manager Joe Schoen for not offering the running back a new contract and retaining his services.
"Fire Joe Schoen now," wrote a fan.
Some fans pondered how miserable Schoen's Sundays are as Barkley makes him regret not handing him a new deal on seemingly a weekly basis:
"Imagine giving Daniel Jones a long-term deal over Saquon. How does Joe Schoen sleep at night?" questioned @RyWeeeeezy
"Joe Schoen having the worst Sunday scaries you can imagine right now," quipped @uglyrickey213
"It must be brutal being Joe Schoen, watching Saquon Barkley do amazing things every week and thinking, "Well s**t, I'm fired," said @JimmyKempski
Saquon Barkley for MVP: RB's incredible campaign
In the game against the Rams, Saquon Barkley recorded his third game this season with over 150 rushing yards. He's closing in on 1,300 for the season and has more yards on the ground on his own than the Giants have as a team (1,275).
The running back's phenomenal performances have also made him a dark horse to win the MVP award. While the award heavily favors quarterbacks, no signal-caller has managed to perform well enough to be the runaway favorite for the prize, giving Barkley an outside shot at winning the award.
The last non-quarterback to be named league MVP was also a running back. Adrian Peterson won the prize in 2012 after rushing for 2,097 yards and 12 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 40 passes for 217 yards and one receiving touchdown. He averaged 144.6 yards from scrimmage in what was a season for the ages.
Through 10 games and three and a half quarters, Barkley is averaging nearly 142 yards from scrimmage. At the time of writing, he is only two touchdowns away from matching Peterson's tally of 13 in his MVP-winning campaign.
