The quarterback throne in the NFL may be undergoing a shakeup. NFL analyst Sam Monson recently made a bold claim: Josh Allen has overtaken Patrick Mahomes as the top signal-caller in the league today.
The declaration, made on the Sunday's episode of "Check the Mic with Steve Palazzolo & Sam Monson," breaks from the long-running consensus.
"I believe the best quarterback right now is Josh Allen," Monson said. "I think he's become the guy. For years, it was Patrick Mahomes. Obviously, you know Brady, that generation, once they went, Mahomes took over. The start of Mahomes' career was absolutely mind-blowing. The last couple of years, though, he's not been that guy. Really it's been Josh Allen."

Patrick Mahomes’ statistical production has taken a noticeable dip over the past two seasons. Last season, Mahomes posted career lows in passing yards and touchdowns, despite guiding Kansas City to a 15-2 regular-season record and another Super Bowl appearance.
Meanwhile, Josh Allen’s received his first MVP award during the 2024 season.

Monson praised Allen’s ability to avoid negative plays and dominate in short-yardage situations.
"I think you can make a case for a couple of other people, but Allen's combination of freak show wow plays like everything he can do with his arm, the cheat code that is his shorty yardage ability, like his athleticism," Monson said. "The fact that he basically does not take sacks. I mean one of the lowest sack rates."
The timing of Monson’s commentary comes on the heels of another quarterback evaluation. Former NFL quarterback and NBC analyst Chris Simms recently dropped Mahomes to No. 4 in his annual QB rankings. Simms placed Allen at No. 2, trailing only Lamar Jackson.
Not everyone is convinced the crown should change hands just yet. Former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel pushed back on the narrative on "The Facility" on Friday. He argued that Mahomes has adapted impressively to a changing roster and evolving offensive environment.
The growing Allen vs. Mahomes debate sets the stage for a pivotal Week 9 clash this fall when the Chiefs travel to Buffalo in a rematch of the AFC Championship Game. Kansas City eliminated the Bills en route to its third consecutive Super Bowl, once again denying Allen his breakthrough postseason run.
