From Deion Sanders to Trevon Diggs, the Dallas Cowboys have been lucky to have some of the best cornerbacks play for them.
Many believe that Sanders is also one of the greatest defensive players to have donned the Cowboys jersey. But if anyone can potentially come and try to take that mantle off him, it has to be Trevon Diggs.
Nonetheless, fans are curious to learn which of the two cornerbacks, Sanders or Diggs, is faster. Since the two played in different eras, a simple way to determine the speed of a player is by using their 40-yard dash times from the NFL Combine.
40-yard dash times: Deion Sanders and Trevon Diggs
Trevon Diggs ran a 4.42-second dash at the 2020 NFL Combine. That's about as fast as it gets for cornerbacks. But Deion Sanders was even quicker than Diggs.
Since the NFL Combine was a much more subdued affair back in 1989, the consensus record is indeterminable. There were four readings from four clocks when Sanders did his dash: 4.27, 4.27, 4.29, and 4.33. If we take the mode from that set, we get a 4.27.
Anything below 4.30 is phenomenal and Sanders achieved that with great aplomb.
As good a cornerback as Trevon Diggs is, he still has a lot to achieve to become the next Deion Sanders. One record that he will never be able to beat, though, is the 40-yard dash time of 'Prime Time'.
Deion Sanders vs Trevon Diggs: Which Cowboys CB has a better legacy?
Deion Sanders played for five years with the Dallas Cowboys, from 1995 to 1999. In those five seasons, he recorded 14 interceptions. His best season was in 1998 when he had five interceptions for 153 yards and one touchdown.
He also made the Pro Bowl in each of his seasons with Dallas except one, missing out in 1995. However, he more than made up for it by winning the Super Bowl that year.
Trevon Diggs, meanwhile, has 18 interceptions already in his career with the Dallas Cowboys, having been drafted in 2020. In the 2021 campaign, he had 11 interceptions, the highest by any player in a season since 1981.
Diggs is a two-time Pro Bowler and has recorded two touchdowns for Dallas so far. He already has more touchdowns than Sanders.
However, a criticism leveled at Diggs has been that he focuses so much on interceptions that he leaves receivers open and gives up more receiving yards. Unfortunately, the 25-year-old tore his ACL in practice this offseason and was ruled out for the 2023 season.
Another area that Diggs lacks in comparison to 'Prime Time' is that he has never won a Super Bowl, something the Hall-of-Famer did in his first season in Dallas. Nonetheless, Diggs still has a long way to go in his career and will hope to win a Super Bowl with the Cowboys.
At the moment, however, Diggs will have to wait on adding to his numbers, owing to a major injury.
