The jersey worn by former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Joe Montana in their two Super Bowl triumphs has sold for $1.212 million plus the buyer's premium. It shattered the auction record for a football jersey as the previous record was set at $480,000 which was paid in January 2022 for a 2021 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tom Brady jersey.

Montana first donned the jersey in Super Bowl XIX, in which his San Francisco 49ers defeated the Miami Dolphins. He also wore the jersey in Super Bowl XXIII, when the 49ers defeated the Cincinnati Bengals.

According to ESPN, another Montana jersey from Super Bowl XXIV against the Denver Broncos sold for $720,000 just after midnight on Thursday.

The jersey sale was part of a month-long auction of Montana's personal memorabilia collection, which included authentication letters from the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback.

The 94-lot auction brought in more than $3.7 million, and it also included Joe Montana's game-used and signed Notre Dame helmet from the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1979.

Tom Brady's jersey previously held the record, and it is likely that the seven-time Super Bowl champion quarterback will set a fresh new record if he decides to put something special up for sale.

Since his arrival in the NFL, Tom Brady has been on a mission to eclipse Montana's legendary career. Montana's four Super Bowl triumphs pale in comparison to the former New England Patriots quarterback's seven Super Bowl titles that he won in his NFL career.

Brady has shattered every record established by Montana, a quarterback whom he idolized as a child. Nonetheless, the record-breaking sale of Montana's Super Bowl jersey gave the Hall of Fame quarterback an advantage against Brady.

With Tom Brady retired, another quarterback is poised to chase Jon Montana and Brady's legacies. Patrick Mahomes is coming for both of them, and he appears to be on track to surpass them in the all-time quarterback rankings.

Brady finished his career while throwing for 89,214 yards and 649 touchdowns in 23 seasons while Montana had thrown for 40,551 yards and 273 touchdowns in 15 seasons.
