Quarterback Josh Allen took a scary hit late in the fourth quarter against the Houston Texans on Sunday. The Buffalo Bills medical staff quickly tended to the quarterback.
Fans were shocked when Allen returned to the field considering the injury looked severe, missing just one play. The video of the quarterback lying on the field quickly circulated on social media.
Fans reacted to the post on X and questioned why the NFL didn't insist on Allen being evaluated longer.
Others compared what happened to Josh Allen to that of Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. Some said that Allen being allowed to return to the game so quickly shows the NFL isn't taking head injuries seriously, despite the known risks.
"nfl should’ve never let him go back in."-one fan said
"Dude was out! Concussed! GHOTFG!! But of course, he is allowed back in."-one person on X stated
"Bet he doesn't miss next week's game but everyone is quick to tell Tua what to do. You can't know one concussion to the next, which one is worse long term. Based on everyone's reactions for Tua, Josh Allen should not be playing next week. Period. #NFL @NFL."-said one person who compared the concussion situation
Other fans were also concerned about the quarterback's health moving forward. Fans asked the NFL Players Association to investigate and decide if there was any wrongdoing in handling Allen's injury.
"And back in the game. I await the national outrage and nflpa investigation."-said a fan who disagreed with the lack of protocols
"NFL should be embarrassed about this one. A WR would be out weeks in protocol."-said one fan who questioned the decision
"I’m deeply concerned for Josh Allen and how this was handled."-said a concerned fan
Josh Allen said he injured his ankle despite concussion concerns
Josh Allen spoke to reporters after Sunday's Week 5 23-20 loss to the Houston Texans. He was asked about the injury and how he felt after he hit his head on the turf late in the fourth quarter.
Allen said that he actually injured his ankle and took a hit to the chest on the play. He said the Buffalo Bills medical staff were checking his ankle when he was flagged by the NFL for a concussion check.
"Big shot to the chest and I rolled my ankle there. They flagged me for hitting my head, but felt good enough to go back in the game," Allen said after the game
Allen didn't mention a head injury further, although the clip shown on the broadcast looked otherwise. Allen and the Buffalo Bills will prepare for a Monday night primetime showdown against the New York Jets next week.
