The Patriots were the leaders in the AFC East division in 1997, but the next two years were disastrous. The Patriots ranked fourth in their division for the next two seasons, and Patriots owner Robert Kraft unwillingly had to fire him. After leaving the Patriots, he took a break from the NFL. The USC Trojans approached him for the position of head coach, which he led from 2000 to 2009. He had a successful tenure with them winning 67 of the 74 games and also winning two championship games.

He joined Barry Switzer and Jimmy Johnson as the only coaches to win both an NCAA championship and a Super Bowl.
