Tom Brady has been in the news recently about a lot of things. Unfortunately, for him, not much of it has been positive. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are 3-5 on the field after Week 8 of this NFL season. This is the first time in his career that he is two wins below a 0.500 record.

Away from the field, there has not been much happy news for him either. Brady and his wife Gisele Bundchen recently called it quits on their marriage. With things not going well, naturally, there are questions as to whether the GOAT is past his prime.

Now, one must remember that just last season he was the stats leader in passing touchdowns, yards and completions. But with a drop-off this year, the focus has naturally again flipped back to his overall fitness and suitability for the game.

Tom Brady's recipe for staying in NFL shape at 45

Tom Brady weighs 225 lbs and is in lean shape for his age. Much of that has to do with a strict diet that has prolonged his longevity.

He eats a mainly plant-based diet that focuses on fruits, nuts and vegetables and cuts down on trans and saturated fats. But it cannot be considered a vegan diet as he consumes lean meat and fish too. The effective split is 80/20 in favor of vegan products.

He eats fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil, nuts and seeds. They are rich in vitamins, minerals and fiber and do not contain much fat either. However, cutting down on other meats means that Tom Brady might miss out on the needed protein for athletes. This is where he has protein shakes and smoothies to meet his protein requirements.

Essentially, it is a healthy lifestyle where he has cut down on fat. But so that he does not miss out on the associated protein, he chooses to supplement it with shakes.

While the method might not work out this season, considering his unparalleled achievements in the game, his diet does not seem to be the main problem. Instead, his travails on the field should be confined to play-design and personnel challenges on the field rather than his lifestyle off it.
