You can always expect LeBron James to speak his mind, be it a fellow athlete or any other celebrity. The Los Angeles Lakers star has often expressed his views on racial injustice, supporting Colin Kaepernick, amongst many others. Unsurprisingly, James did not hold back from calling out NFL star Drew Brees in 2020, who made a statement about kneeling during the national anthem.

Kaepernick first made news for kneeling before NFL games. While support was far and scattered, the former San Francisco 49ers star kept up his efforts for years.

In an old interview, Brees went on to question the action, viewing it as disrespectful towards the US flag.

“I will never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag of the United States of America or our country."

Brees was also among those who went against Kaepernick's initial protest, disagreeing publicly.

LeBron James replied on Twitter, clearly upset over Brees not understanding the point or reason behind the action.

"WOW MAN!! Is it still surprising at this point. Sure isn’t! You literally still don’t understand why Kap was kneeling on one knee?? Has absolute nothing to do with the disrespect of [the flag] and our soldiers [men and women] who keep our land free."

He continued:

"My father-in-law was one of those men who fought as well for this country. I asked him question about it and thank him all the time for his commitement."

According to James, his father-in-law did not find Kaepernick's protests offensive, especially since they have a good understanding of what's right and what's wrong.

LeBron James' words caused a lot of backlash against Drew Brees

Following James' words, Brees issued a statement regarding his comments. There was significant backlash on social media, with many fans disappointed in Brees for his outdated views.

Some praised James for his candor, happy that the Los Angeles Lakers icon came forward and called Brees out.

Brees' apology was lengthy and thorough, and the 43-year-old spoke to everyone he offended:

"I made comments that were insensitive and completely missed the mark on the issues we are facing right now as a country. They lacked awareness and any type of compassion or empathy".

A few people remained unhappy with Brees' comments, stating that he folded faster than they thought. Some were happy with his apology and glad he directly addressed the situation after LeBron James' statement.
