Could free agent Baker Mayfield join the Dallas Cowboys in 2023? That is certainly a possibility. Cowboys beat writer K. D. Drummond hinted at the possibility in an article, stating that Dallas will look for a new backup quarterback for next season and that Mayfield is a possibility.
According to Drummond, the Cowboys will let Cooper Rush walk away because of the money he's slated to earn during free agency, which opens up the possibility of Dallas signing a new backup quarterback.
"Cooper Rush played himself into a solid contract this offseason and that money isn’t going to come from a club which has invested $40 million per season in their starter. He’ll get paid by a team looking for a bridge/mentor type to a highly-drafted rookie QB."
Mayfield himself has earned a new life in the NFL following two good performances since he joined the Los Angeles Rams and played under Sean McVay's tutelage. However, he has no long-term future with the franchise as the Rams have Matthew Stafford under contract, and the veteran will surely regain the QB1 job when he returns healthy next season.
Following the end of his tenures with the Cleveland Browns and the Carolina Panthers over the previous two seasons, it feels impossible for the former first-overall pick to get a starter job in 2023. Settling for a backup role in an established offense with good playmakers represents the perfect opportunity for him to get back on track.

Would Baker Mayfield be a great fit for the Cowboys?
Signing Mayfield as the backup to Dak Prescott would be a fantastic deal for Dallas.
Having a backup quarterback that you can trust is one of the best things for an NFL team, and they can rely on Mayfield as long as Dak is out.
Prescott missed games in the 2020 and 2022 seasons. With Mayfield under center leading such a potent offense, you know that you have a quarterback who's capable of not turning the ball over and orchestrating good drives.
Baker also brings playoff experience with him, and you certainly love to hear it from your backup quarterback.
If Dallas indeed goes into the market searching for a new backup quarterback, not many options would be as good as him. He's not supposed to be your franchise quarterback. All you need is a guy to keep things running smoothly long enough for your starter to heal. This is exactly what Baker would give the Cowboys.
