NFL Rumors: Chiefs set to decline fifth-year option on Clyde Edwards-Helaire

Kansas City Chiefs v San Francisco 49ers
Kansas City Chiefs running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire may not have shown the team enough to secure a fifth-year option.

NFL teams will have until May to decide if they will exercise the fifth-year option on eligible players, and the Kansas City Chiefs may have already made that decision.

According to the Athletic's Kansas City Chiefs writer, Nate Taylor, Kansas City will not exercise the fifth-year option on running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

The Chiefs drafted Edwards-Helaire in the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft out of LSU. There was a high ceiling for the running back coming out of college, but he hasn't impressed the team, as many had hoped, yet.

In his rookie season, Edwards-Helaire rushed for 803 yards and four touchdowns, which ended up being career highs out of his three NFL seasons thus far. In 2021, he rushed for just over 500 yards and in 2022, he started just six games, playing in ten and rushed for 302 yards and three touchdowns.

Rookie running back Isiah Pacheco made an impact on the Chiefs offense in 2022 during the team's Super Bowl run. He rushed for 380 yards and five touchdowns while also adding 597 receiving yards to his resume as well.

During the playoffs, he started all three games for Kansas City, rushing for 197 yards and one touchdown and also had 65 receiving yards and 45 return yards on special teams.

By not exercising the fifth-year option on Clyde Edwards-Helaire, it doesn't mean he won't play in 2023. The running back is only entering his fourth NFL season and the team could decide to extend him after that.

Why did RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire not attend Chiefs Super Bowl Parade?

The Kansas City Chiefs celebrated their Super Bowl LVII victory with a parade through the streets and shared it with their loyal fan base. But there was one member of the team that was visibly absent from the parade: running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire.

So, where was the running back? He was walking during New York Fashion Week.

He walked the runway for Daniels Leather, making his debut during New York Fashion Week after meeting with founder Nadeem Waheed, who offered him a spot in the show.

"Man, it's always been a privilege to be able to see Wadeem's leather and follow him, but being here in person and being here to lay eyes on everything, it's gonna be something special. See you guys at the fashion show tonight. We're gonna take over."-Clyde Edwards-Helaire

The player has been a fan of the designer for years and jumped at the opportunity to see everything that was curated for the show and walk the runway for the first time.
