NFL Rumors: Daniel Jones set to receive massive contract extension worth over $35 million

NFC Divisional Playoffs - New York Giants v Philadelphia Eagles
Could New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones be the next NFL player to receive a hefty pay day?

Daniel Jones and the New York Giants made quite the turnaround in the 2022 NFL season. After a 4-13 record in 2021, the Giants, led by first-year head coach Brian Daboll, clinched a NFC Wild Card spot with a 9-7 record and defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the playoffs.

After a very successful first season under Daboll, the Giants have a plethora of decisions to make about their roster. With key players due to hit free agency, the Giants must decide which players they want to lock up on long-term deals.

Quarterback Daniel Jones may be one of the players the Giants are ready to give a significant contract to.

According to SNY's Connor Hughes, the Giants believe that Jones is their quarterback for the future. If they do decide to extend him the market value for a quarterback would fall between $35 and $40 million per year.

"The appropriate figure is believed to be somewhere between $35 and $37 million, two executives familiar with the quarterback market told SNY."

While the Giants and Daniel Jones will have to decide on a contract extension, this could have been avoided heading into the 2023 NFL season. The Giants declined to pick up the quarterback's fifth-year option for the 2023 season, which would have cost them $22.38 million.

Instead, they will now need to work out a deal that will cost them at the very least another $13 million more than if they had chosen to pick up the fifth-year option.

As an unrestricted free agent, Jones will be able to meet and speak with any team in the league. So the New York Giants' offer will have to be quite handsome to sign him up for the future. But they will also have to keep the salary cap space in mind as they build a team around their young quarterback.

Former Giant Tiki Barber believes Daniel Jones has bright future

Former New York Giants running back Tiki Barber (who now hosts WFAN's "Tiki and Tierney") had some high praise for quarterback Daniel Jones. Barber said that he believes that the 25 year old will be the best quarterback in the entire NFC East.

Barber went on to acknowledge the success of Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts but said that he still believes that the Giants quarterback could be the best in the years to come.

“He is going to be the best quarterback in the NFC East. I know that Jalen Hurts is a stud, I know that he’s amazing, got all these accolades, but he’s also got a lot around him.”- Tiki Barber

Barber noted that the coaching staff that the Giants quarterback now has around him will help lead to his future success. He said that his frame allows him to be a pocket passer but he also has the ability and speed to run if the situation presents itself.

Barber's comments may come as a bit of a shock. Especially as NFC East rivals the Philadelphia Eagles and quarterback Jalen Hurts are days away from playing in the Super Bowl. But he has faith that if the Giants re-sign their quarterback, they can make something happen.
