It's that time of year again, as rumors about Jim Harbaugh returning to the NFL are swirling. It seems like an annual tradition that his name gets brought up during every head coach hiring cycle since 2015. This has been a feature ever since he left the NFL to accept the college football head coaching job for the Michigan Wolverines in the Big Ten Conference.

Jim Harbaugh has found plenty of success as the head coach for Michigan. He has accumulated an impressive 74-24 overall record and has helped the Wolverines make two consecutive appearances in the College Football Playoffs. This is one of the main reasons why NFL teams are once again interested in acquiring the proven head coach.

NFL insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero recently reported that franchises are doing homework on Jim Harbaugh as a potential candidate. Rapoport followed it by tweeting about how the Indianapolis Colts (one of Harbaugh's former teams during his playing career) currently have a head coaching opening. He is not so subtly implying that Harbaugh could be interested in the position.

The Colts recently fired head coach Frank Reich and hired former center Jeff Saturday to replace him as interim head coach. He will be the acting HC for the remainder of the 2022 NFL season. It's unclear at this point if Saturday will earn the full-time job, but Rapoport seems to believe that Harbaugh is a legitimate candidate for the position.

Prior to leaving the NFL for the Michigan job, Harbaugh served as the head coach for the San Francisco 49ers. He's a proven winner, accumulating a 49-22-1 overall record. He helped the 49ers reach three consecutive NFC Championship games and also made a Super Bowl appearance.

Harbaugh was previously a head coaching candidate last year during the 2022 NFL offseason. He interviewed with the Minnesota Vikings, but ultimately decided to remain with the Michigan Wolverines. As the 2023 offseason approaches, he is once again in the mix of rumors to enter the NFL as a head coach again.

Jim Harbaugh spent 15 seasons in the NFL as a quarterback. He split time between the Chicago Bears, Indianapolis Colts, Baltimore Ravens, Los Angeles Chargers, and Carolina Panthers.

He spent four seasons as the starting quarterback for the Colts, which is likely why his name is being rumored as a potential candidate for their head coaching job opening for the 2023 NFL season.

As to whether he is interested in the role, that remains to be seen.
