Who has the most touchdowns on NFL Thanksgiving Day?

Los Angeles Chargers v Dallas Cowboys
Los Angeles Chargers v Dallas Cowboys

The NFL loves itself a good Thanksgiving Day game, and over time, this game has become a league-wide tradition. Two teams are synonymous with the Thanksgiving Day game -- the Dallas Cowboys and the Detroit Lions. They have hosted a Thanksgiving Day game for over forty seasons. The Detroit Lions have hosted a Thanksgiving Day game every year since 1945, and the Dallas Cowboys have done so since 1978.

As such, and in keeping with the technological fixation of keeping statistics, we decided to dive into the record books and check out a couple of touchdown-related Thanksgiving Day stats. Of course, these stats are lopsided to favor players representing the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions, but you might be surprised to see a few interesting names up there. So, without further ado, let's do some Thanksgiving prying and analyze a few Thanksgiving Day TD records.

2. Matthew Stafford (Lions) -- 18

3. Bobby Layne (Lions) -- 14

As you would expect, this record is filled with Dallas and Detroit legends, with the great Tony Romo leading the pack. Tony Romo sure loved himself a Thanksgiving treat, and the Cowboys legend feasted on league rivals repeatedly during his lengthy spell as Dallas' shot caller.

However, Matthew Stafford gave him a run for his record, and if not for Stafford's trade to defending Super Bowl champions, the Los Angeles Rams, he would have broken Romo's record by now.

Most Rushing Touchdowns on NFL Thanksgiving (All-Time)

1. Emmitt Smith (Cowboys) -- 13

2. Tony Dorsett (Cowboys) -- 9

3. Barry Sanders (Lions) -- 8

Another Thanksgiving Day touchdown record held by a Dallas Cowboys legend. Hall of Famer Emmitt Smith is as decorated as they come. Just like Tony Romo, he loved going off on Thanksgiving Day games.

As evidenced by his wide lead over Tony Dorsett in second place, Smith was no slouch on the Gridiron. Other upcoming Dallas Cowboys backfield players like Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard have work to do if they want to match or surpass the Cowboys' legend's record.

Most Receiving Touchdowns on NFL Thanksgiving (All-Time)

1. Calvin Johnson (Lions) --11

2. Cloyce Box (Lions) -- 7

3. Michael Irvin (Cowboys) -- 6

Finally, a Thanksgiving Day record held by a Detroit Lions legend rather than a member from America's Team. The most receiving touchdowns record is held by the great Calvin Johnson, who played his whole career at the Detroit Lions and who happens to be the greatest wide receiver in Lions' history.

Calvin Johnson did it all for the Lions, and it was hard to find a better wide receiver than Johnson when he played in the NFL. As such, it is no surprise that the Lions' speedster holds the NFL Receiving Touchdowns record, trumping second-place Cloyce Box by a wide margin.

The NFL has plenty of traditions on Thanksgiving Day, and more records are bound to be broken this year and in the next couple of years. Hence, do not hesitate to follow the upcoming NFL Thanksgiving Day action, and we will keep you updated!
