Nick Sirianni and Andy Reid will face off in Super Bowl 2023 as Kansas City Chiefs face the Philadelphia Eagles. However, it's not the first time Reid and Sirianni have crossed paths.

Reid was hired by the Chiefs in 2013 after being fired by the Eagles in 2012. He was assembling his coaching staff and a young Nick Sirianni was with the team as the wide receivers coach under former head coach Romeo Crennel.

Reid had to make a decision on whether to retain Sirianni on his coaching staff. The head coach explained why he had to move on from Nick Sirianni. He explained to reporters that he knew Sirianni was a special coach but wanted to bring in his own wide receivers coach instead.

“When I came here, I was told Nick Sirianni — this guy is really a special coach. Really, a good football coach. But I had David [Culley]. David was my assistant head coach and he’d been with me for 14 years and so he was coming with me."

Reid added:

"I had to make that determination to keep Nick or not. And I knew being as good as he was and the reputation he had, I knew he was going to get something. And so, it’s worked out great for him.”

For Sirianni, facing Andy Reid for your first-ever Super Bowl appearance as a head coach is special. What makes it special is his journey leading up to becoming the Eagles head coach after leaving the Chiefs.

The path of Nick Sirianni becoming the Eagles head coach after stint with Chiefs

Sirianni spent five seasons with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers coaching staff (2013-2017), including the last two as their wide receivers coach. He was then hired by the Indianapolis Colts as their offensive coordinator for three seasons (2018-2020). On 24 January 2021, the Philadelphia Eagles hired Sirianni as their head coach, replacing Doug Pederson.

In his first season as head coach, Sirianni led the Eagles to a 9-8 record and to the playoffs, losing in the Wild Card round. In year two under Sirianni, the Eagles have won 14 games in the regular season, the most wins in franchise history in a season. He's the fourth Eagles head coach to lead the team to a Super Bowl in history, joining Reid, Pederson, and Hall of Famer Dick Vermeil.
