Phione is a Water type Pokemon that was introduced along with the Sinnoh Region (Generation IV). The only way to obtain this Pokemon is by breeding a Manaphy with a Ditto or a Phione. Based on Sea Angels, this Pokemon drits around in the sea but no matter how far it drifts, it always ends up back home.

Appearance

Phione is based on a Sea Angel, a type of slug, and is primarily blue. It has a dew shaped head with a sac on top of it. Its face consists of two eyes and a mouth, with markings around its eyes with the same oval shape as the eyes in a dark blue shade. From these markings, there are extensions upwards which are connected to a circle. The lower body of this Pokemon is smaller than its head and it has two arms which extend out and is larger than the entire body as well. At the middle of this Phione’s body is a red gem. It also has a pointy end at the bottom.

Behavior

If Phione was to be described in one word, it would be ‘Drifter’. It drifts from one place to another aimlessly in the Ocean and is especially found in warm waters. With the help of the flotation sac on top of its head, it drifts from place to place in packs. But no matter how far it goes, it always finds a way back home as it could drift to an entirely different region and could still end up back home. Phione is constantly in search of food while it is floating on the ocean beds.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Phione is a pure Water type, which means that it’s weaknesses and resistances are quite normal. It takes double the normal damage from Grass and Electric type moves. On the other hand, it is resistant to Steel, Fire, Water and Ice type moves but does not have any immunities and is normally affected by every other type.

Best moveset

Despite being a mythical Pokemon, Phione is one of the weakest Pokemon of that status. This is because of its horrible base stat of 80 for every stat, which is incredibly low. However, any Pokemon can be viable if you really want to play it and Phione can act as a good support for a Water type in your team. After giving it a Damp Rock to hold, Rain Dance lasts a few extra turns. Use U-Turn immediately afterwards to switch out to the other Pokemon. If there is a scenario where you can not use U-Turn or switch out to other Pokemon, that is where Scald comes into play. With Scald, you can deal decent damage in the rain and get the STAB benefit. Finally, Toxic can be used before using U-Turn or if you’re doing an all out battle. Use it as you may wish as it deals insane DoT.

Trivia

  1. Phione is the only Mythical Pokemon that can be obtained through breeding.

  3. Despite Mythical Pokemon usually not being more than one, Phione usually swim in packs.

FAQs

Is Phione a legendary Pokemon?

Phione is not a legendary, but rather a Mythical Pokemon. However, there are lots of debates concerning whether it really is a Mythical Pokemon.

Is Phione related to Manaphy?

Yes. In fact, the only way to obtain Manaphy is by breeding a Manaphy with a Phione or a Ditto.

What does the Pokemon Phione evolve into?

Phione does not evolve from or into anything. However, it can be obtained by breeding a Manaphy.

Conclusion

Phione is a very pretty Pokemon which drifts around the ocean without any stress or sense of responsibility. Inhabiting warm waters, this Pokemon’s status as a mythical Pokemon is debated often. It also adds to the debate that this Pokemon has horrible base stats, making it almost non-viable in combat. It can be easily replaced and if you really want to use Phione in battle, you can always use Manaphy, which is almost the same Pokemon with much higher base stats and access to Tail Glow, giving it a position in OU.
