World Tag Team Championship is one of the most prestigious championships in WWE with a history of more than two decades. This championship was introduced in 2002 as the WWE Tag Team Championship during the original brand split. Kurt Angle and Chris Benoit were the first WWE Tag Team Champions, defeating Edge and Rey Mysterio in the finals of a tournament to become the champions. The WWE Tag Team Championship was initially a SmackDown brand-exclusive championship, but in 2009, it became a championship that could be defended on any WWE brand.
With the brand split, which saw the WWE roster separated into two separate brands: RAW and SmackDown, the WWE Tag Team Championship was renamed the RAW Tag Team Championship in 2016. The title's design was also changed, with the original Bronze plate replaced by an identical Silver plate and the Black Leather strap replaced in favor of a red one to represent the brand that the title was exclusive to. The RAW Tag Team Championships were unified with its SmackDown counterparts in 2022 and renamed Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship. However, the champion carries the two belts separately. At WrestleMania XL Night One, the titles were again split into two.
On the April 15, 2024, episode of RAW, WWE RAW Tag Team Championship was renamed to World Tag Team Championship.
Current World Tag Team Champions
The Miz and R-Truth are the current World Tag Team Champions in WWE. The two stars are known as Awesome Truth. At WrestleMania XL Night One, the Undisputed WWE Champion Judgment Day (Finn Balor and Damian Priest) defended their title in a Six-Pack Tag Team Ladder match. The two titles were hanged separately. Austin Theory and Grayson Waller managed to get the SmackDown Tag Team Championship while R-Truth and The Miz won the RAW Tag Team Championship. On the April 15, 2024, episode of RAW, WWE RAW Tag Team Championship was renamed to World Tag Team Championship. The Awesome Truth was the first tag team to be awarded the new title belt.
