Masashi Kishimoto’s unforgettable Naruto series is filled with paramount fighters. Guy, Kakashi, Obito, Naruto, Sasuke, Madara, and Hashirama, are just a few of the many ninjas who are on everyone’s lips for their incredible techniques and combat prowess.

While the franchise’s female cast doesn’t feature as many powerful representatives as the male one, it’s surely not to be underestimated. The absolute strongest Naruto character is a woman, after all.

This thread will rank the mightiest female characters in the original Naruto series. It will span from various kunoichi, such as Konan, Sakura, and more, up to the all-powerful goddess Kaguya Otsutsuki. The list won’t include characters from Boruto.

The most powerful women in Naruto, ranked weakest to strongest

20) Tsume Inuzuka

A major member of the Inuzuka clan, Tsume is a Special Jonin for the Hidden Leaf. She is very good at taijutsu, as she can perform combined attacks with her trusted ninja dog, Kuromaru, just like Kiba does with Akamaru.

Tsume's proficiency with her clan's signature moves, such as Four Legs Technique and Fang Passing Fang, is remarkable, and so is her ability to track enemies via their smell. Funnily enough, according to Kiba, Tsume is so wild that she scared away her husband.

19) Shizune

Tsunade's assistant and former apprentice, Shizune is a very capable medical ninja. She was even appointed leader of the Shinobi Alliance's Medical Team during the Fourth Ninja War.

Shizune's specialty isn't direct combat, but she still achieved the rank of Jonin. Thus, she is not to be underestimated. She can emit poisonous gas, and launch surprise attacks with paralyzing projectiles, as well as heal herself.

Unfortunately, despite her dangerous techniques, Shizune was no match for Kabuto, who dodged her moves and easily defeated her in seconds.

18) Kurenai Yuhi

Before her retirement, Kurenai proved herself to be a skilled kunoichi. A newly appointed Jonin, she was the leader of Team 8, and thus the teacher of Shino, Kiba, and Hinata.

Kurenai was highly proficient with genjutsu, even though her best technique, the Demonic Illusion: Tree Binding Death, was completely useless against Itachi. The latter easily reversed it with his Sharingan.

Kurenai showed quick reflexes, as she was able to dodge a taijutsu attack from Itachi Uchiha. Briefly after, however, she was completely unable to react to the Uchiha's fast ninjutsu combo and would have been killed if Kakashi didn't protect her from Itachi's technique.

17) Hinata Hyuga

Hinata (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

At the beginning of the series, Hinata was a rather underwhelming fighter. After being inspired by Naruto Uzumaki, she committed herself to becoming stronger, eventually growing into a skilled and brave kunoichi.

Owing to her Byakugan, Hinata has a vision nearly 360° around herself. She can perform the Gentle Step Twin Lion Fists and the Eight Trigram Vacuum Palm, refined techniques that hinder her enemy’s chakra pathway systems.

At one point, Hinata dared to defy the mighty Deva Path of Pain. Unsurprisingly, she stood no chance against Pain, who easily defeated her, but the occurrence still emphasized her genuine love for Naruto.

16) Anko Mitarashi

A Special Jonin from the Hidden Leaf, Anko gained Orochimaru's interest. This alone proves the uncommon extent of her skills, as the latter would never be interested in someone weak and untalented.

Anko learned ninjutsu directly from Orochimaru, including all the variants of the Shadow Snake Hands technique, as well as the Twin Snakes Mutual Death Jutsu. Additionally, she has some expertise with Fire Style techniques.

15) Karin

Karin (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

A former subordinate of Orochimaru, Karin was recruited by Sasuke Uchiha into his group. Karin mostly acts as a support, but she is a decently skilled kunoichi, considering that Orochimaru trusted her to act as warden of the Southern Hideout in his absence.

Owing to her Uzumaki origins, Karin has exceptional chakra reserves and life force. She mainly uses her chakra to treat her allies as well as herself, healing even life-threatening wounds almost instantly.

Karin has amazing sensory abilities, as she can sense, track, and evaluate any target’s chakra signature. During the Fourth Ninja War, Karin unleashed her full might, as she materialized chakra chains powerful enough to damage Tobi’s giant wooden statue.

14) Ringo Ameyuri

As a member of the most renowned generation of the Hidden Mist’s Seven Ninja Swordsmen, Ringo Ameyuri is among the strongest ninjas her village ever produced. She was the owner of Kiba, twin swords that can channel high-frequency Lightning Style, and even conduct natural lightning.

Combined with her agility, the Kiba blades made Ameyuri a rather dangerous foe. Resurrected as part of Kabuto’s army of undeads, she showcased all her prowess. In the anime, she overpowered Omoi, to whom she left her swords as a gift for the entertaining battle.

13) Pakura

Pakura had great mastery over the Scorch Style, a rare Kekkei Genkai that enabled her to create special orbs. Upon contact with a human, those orbs would evaporate all the moisture in the target's body, immediately killing him or her by hyper-accelerated mummification.

Owing to her lethal ninjutsu techniques, Pakura earned the fame of a powerful kunoichi. Unsurprisingly, Kabuto considered her worthy of being reincarnated as part of his army of undeads.

12) Temari

Temari (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)
Temari (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

Temari is a highly capable Wind Style user. Even as a Genin, she was strong enough to brutally defeat Sound Four member Tayuya. In Naruto’s Part II, she obtained the rank of Jonin and was even chosen to be one of the Fifth Kazekage’s bodyguards.

Temari wields a huge iron fan, which she uses to perform slicing whirlwinds. She can fight while keeping a safe distance from her foes, as well as defend herself and attack at the same time.

Summoning a creature called Kamatari, Temari can amp the power of her Wind Style move to the point. In doing so, she destroyed an entire forest, while killing a Curse Seal-boosted Tayuya as well.

Temari’s strongest attack is the Wind Style: Casting Net. Performing this move together with several other Wind Style experts, she was able to wound the immensely tough Third Raikage. However, it must be noted that the Raikage wasn’t using his Lightning Chakra Mode at the time.

11) Chiyo

Chiyo (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

A capable fighter even as an apparently frail old woman, Chiyo was a masterful puppeteer with notable skills in sealing and medical techniques. She was one of the Hidden Sand Village’s best and most famous ninjas, as well as a fearsome rival to Tsunade.

Wielding Mother and Father, two puppets that she personally modified and equipped, Chiyo was able to fight optimally against Sasori’s Third Kazekage human puppet. During the battle, she showcased sharp reflexes by controlling Sakura as a human puppet.

Although not to the extent of her grandson Sasori, Chiyo modified her own body, making her right arm mechanical and providing it with a chakra shield. Also helped by Sakura, Chiyo used the Chikamatsu Collection of Ten Puppets to fend off Sasori’s Performance of a Hundred Puppets.

Eventually, Chiyo stabbed Sasori, killing him. However, it was made clear that the latter allowed himself to be struck. Shortly after, Chiyo sacrificed her own life to perform a special technique that resurrected Gaara.

10) Fu

A kunoichi from the Hidden Waterfall Village, Fu was the jinchuriki of the Seven Tails Chomei. She could use plenty of different techniques, including the Hiding In Scale Powder Jutsu, a move that enabled her to blind her targets with a cloud of blinding scales.

As far as it’s currently known, Fu died before achieving full control over the Seven Tails. Still, as a jinchuriki, Fu definitely had an extremely huge amount of chakra, and the ability to use, at least to a certain extent, the fearsome might of the Tailed Beast she had sealed inside.

9) Kurotsuchi

Kurotsuchi (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

For most of the series, Kurotsuchi was a Jonin. She served as a bodyguard for her grandfather, the Third Tsuchikage Onoki. During the Fourth Ninja War, she fought alongside her father, Kitsuchi. Together, the two eradicated a large number of White Zetsu clones.

After Onoki retired, Kurotsuchi became the new Tsuchikage. A brilliant elemental ninjutsu user, she can employ Earth Style to erect rock domes, hide underground, launch her opponents from underground, or strike them with sharp spikes. She can also use a Kekkei Genkai, the Lava Style, to trap and restrain her foes.

8) Mei Terumi

Mei Terumi (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

A highly specialized elemental ninjutsu user, Mei is an expert of Water Style, which is totally fitting for her, as she was the FIfth Mizukage. She can masterfully use techniques like the Water Dragon, the Water Pillar, or the Hidden Mist Jutsu.

Mei possesses not just one but two Kekkei Genkai, the Lava Style, which allows her to spit out acidic mud, and the Boil Style, which she uses to release a corrosive mist. Potentially, Mei’s ninjutsu are dangerous, as they can melt most targets. Granted, that’s assuming that they hit the mark.

Owing to her ninjutsu skill, Mei can make it hard for most enemies to get close to her, and control the battlefield, especially if it’s an enclosed area. Still, based on her battle performance, Mei seems one of the weakest among the Five Kage who fought and lost to Madara Uchiha.

7) Konan

The Akatsuki’s only female member, Konan co-founded the organization alongside Nagato and Yahiko. Owing to her mastery of the Shikigami Dance Jutsu, she could convert her body into sheets of paper, creating wings to fly, suffocating her targets, or attacking them with projectiles and spears.

She could also create paper clones, and conceal explosive tags within them. Despite her versatile abilities, Konan was subdued by her former teacher Jiraiya, who used toad oil to stick the paper together, so that it couldn’t be manipulated.

After Nagato’s death, Konan defected from Akatsuki. Knowing that Obito would eventually come looking for her, Konan meticulously amassed six hundred billion explosives that would go off for ten minutes non-stop. This prevented the former from using his Kamui space-time jutsu.

Obito survived the uninterrupted series of blasts via Izanagi and mercilessly killed Konan shortly after. The occurrence, however, did emphasize that especially if given time to prepare in advance for a fight, she was a really dangerous kunoichi.

6) Yugito Nii

An expert Jonin from the Hidden Cloud Village, Yugito was the jinchuriki of Matatabi, the Two Tails. A testament to Yugito’s prowess, even Killer B looked up to her as a brilliant and powerful ninja.

Swift and agile, Yugito could use a jutsu to turn her nails into dreadful claws, making her even more dangerous at taijutsu. Her ninjutsu repertoire included a Fire Style technique that would pursue the target and explode upon contact.

Yugito didn’t have complete control over the Two Tails but could evoke a large part of the Tailed Beast's chakra to transform into its full form, although on a smaller scale. Matatabi’s chakra granted Yugito increased durability, speed, and physical strength.

It enabled her to breathe fire for devastating results. Attacked by Kakuzu and Hidan, Yugito ultimately lost to the two Akatsuki members, but not without giving them a substantial amount of trouble.

5) Mito Uzumaki

Mito Uzumaki was Hashirama Senju’s faithful wife. A very prominent member of the Uzumaki clan, Mito was blessed with uncommon life force and chakra. She was also immensely skilled with sealing techniques. For these traits, she was chosen to become the Nine Tails Kurama’s first jinchuriki ever.

Mito never gained full control over the beast, but could likely unleash a portion of its chakra, which would still grant her insane raw power. The exact extent of Mito’s combat prowess is unknown, but her successor Kushina described her as a particularly powerful kunoichi.

4) Tsunade

Tsunade (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)
Tsunade (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

One of the Leaf’s Three Legendary Ninjas, Tsunade held the role of Hokage for several years. With regards to medical ninjutsu, she is absolutely outstanding, only surpassed by her disciple, Sakura Haruno. Notably, Tsunade can summon the giant slug Katsuyu to amp up her healing abilities.

Tsunade can focus her chakra to perform unbelievable feats of superhuman strength, delivering extremely destructive punches and kicks. Releasing the chakra she stored within the Strength of a Hundred Seal, she can increase her power output even further.

The same jutsu also boosts the effect of the Creation Rebirth technique, which allows her to heal even fatal wounds in an instant. Combined with her naturally high life force, these two techniques enable Tsunade to survive most attacks, and then ravage her foes.

While outrageously powerful, however, Tsunade’s blows aren’t particularly fast, which makes them easy to dodge for ninjas who are fast and reactive or can use elusive techniques. For instance, she would be at a great disadvantage against high-level Sharingan users.

3) Sakura Haruno

Sakura never reached the same heights as her teacher Kakashi, as well as her teammates Naruto and Sasuke, but still blossomed into a quite remarkable ninja. She learned medical ninjutsu directly from Tsunade, and eventually surpassed her.

Admittedly, this is an impressive achievement for someone who, at the beginning of the series, was extremely weak. Driven by the desire to no longer be a burden for her comrades, Sakura worked hard to master the art of chakra control, which granted her superhuman physical strength.

Sakura’s effort bore fruit, as, owing to her honed skills, she was able to be of great help to Chiyo in the fight against Sasori, an Akatsuki member. Later in the story, Sakura improved further, as she became able to summon the giant slug Katsuyu, and to use the Strength of a Hundred Seal.

This technique significantly amped both Sakura’s medical ninjutsu and her raw power output, enabling her to perform accelerated healing and deliver destructive blows at once.

2) Kushina Uzumaki

The wife of Minato Namikaze, Kushina was the jinchuriki of the Nine Tails before her son Naruto. She was able to use a unique style of ninjutsu, which granted her uncommon recognition. Owing to her Uzumaki blood, Kushina had exceptional chakra reserves, life force, and stamina.

Fearing that the Nine Tails would break free, Kushina never relied voluntarily on the all-powerful Tailed Beast’s might. Still, having the entirety of the Nine-Tails sealed within her increased the potency and quantity of Kushina's chakra to insane levels.

Kushina inherited the Uzumaki clan’s famed fuinjutsu techniques, in which she was especially versed. She could also use the Adamantine Sealing Chains, a technique strong enough to restrain and subdue the Nine-Tails even when Kushina was already exhausted and on the brink of death herself.

It was stated that Kushina's chakra chains far surpassed Karin’s version of the jutsu, which was still powerful enough to overwhelm Tobi’s wooden statue, that was cornering the Five Kage. This is telling of how strong Kushina was.

1) Kaguya Otsutsuki

Kaguya Otsutsuki (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)
Kaguya Otsutsuki (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

As the strongest individual in the entire Naruto series, Kaguya is, by far, the franchise’s strongest female character. She could survive any injury, making her essentially immortal. The only means to eradicate her was the Six Paths Chibaku Tensei, which the Sage of Six Paths and his brother once used to seal her.

Kaguya was a goddess, with unparalleled powers, far surpassing even those of Ten Tails jinchuriki Madara with a complete Rinnegan. With her Rinne Sharingan’s Amenominaka, Kaguya could instantly rewrite reality, replacing the space around and trapping any foe into a different dimension.

She could also open space-time rifts to teleport herself and her attacks, including the All-Killing Ash Bones, a move capable of reducing any target into ash with a single strike. Kaguya’s mightiest technique, the Expansive Truth-Seeking Ball, was strong enough to reduce the world into nothingness.

A testament to Kaguya’s basic speed and power, she easily dodged Sasuke’s Six Paths Chidori, even though the latter teleported himself. Also, she destroyed Sasuke’s Six Paths-amped Perfect Susanoo with simple chakra fists.

To beat Kaguya the combined effort of the entire Team 7, with all its members in their strongest versions was necessary. Kaguya still overwhelmed Six Paths-powered Naruto and Sasuke and only lost when Kakashi used Obito’s chakra and eye powers to turn the tides of the battle.

Final Thoughts

Rin (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)
Rin (Image via Studio Pierrot, Naruto)

Although decently skilled kunoichi, Tenten, Hanabi Hyuga, Yugao Uzuki, Tayuya, Ino Yamanaka, Samui, and Karui couldn’t make it to the selection of the top 20 strongest Naruto female characters. However, their names deserve an honorable mention.

A special mention must be made to Rin Nohara, the childhood comrade of Kakashi and Obito. A young medical ninja, she was eventually forced to become the jinchuriki of the Three-Tails Isobu. Notably, Rin had such chakra and willpower that she could suppress the Tailed Beast long enough to prevent it from bringing destruction into the Hidden Leaf.

Although Rin never made use of Isobu’s powers, she could have done it if she had wanted. As the jinchuriki of the Three-Tails, she might have deserved a high position in the ranking. However, with the current information there’s no way to estimate how powerful Rin could have been. Thus, she wasn’t included in the list.
