2013 EuroBasket second round: Croatia, Greece and Slovenia win on Day 2

Croatia, Greece and hosts Slovenia won their respective matches on day two of the second round of the 38th edition of the FIBA Europe Basketball Championship for men, better known as 2013 EuroBasket.

Following are the results of the Group F matches:

Finland 63- 88 Croatia

A dominant Croatia thrashed Finland 88-63.

They took the first three quarters 17-11, 22-9 and 24-18 respectively to ease past their opponents, while both teams scored 25 points in the final quarter.

Damjan Rudez scored a game-high 17 points for Croatia while Shawn Huff top scored with 10 points for Finland.

Greece 79-75 Spain

Greece fought hard to keep their hopes alive of advancing to the quarterfinal by upsetting defending champions Spain 79-75.

Spain took the first quarter 26-15 and had an early lead but Greece took the second quarter 25-12. After the break Spain took the third quarter 19-11 but Greece held their nerve in the last quarter to take it 27-18 and win the match.

Vassilis Spanoulis finished with 20 points for Greece while Rudy Fernandez and Marc Gasol scored 20 points each for Spain.

Slovenia 84-77 Italy

Slovenia handed Italy their first loss of the tournament as they won a hard-fought contest 84-77.

Italy took the first quarter 21-18 but the hosts took the second quarter 27-18. The third quarter was a tie as both teams scored 15 points each while Slovenia took the last quarter 24-23 to win the match.

Goran Dragic contributed a game-high 22 points for the hosts while Alessandro Gentile netted 20 points for Italy.

Group F standings after day two of the second round:

  1. Italy: 5 pts.
  2. Slovenia: 5 pts.
  3. Croatia: 5 pts.
  4. Spain: 4 pts.
  5. Greece: 4 pts.
  6. Finland: 4 pts.

There are 5 teams each in Group E and F in the second round of the 2013 EuroBasket. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals of the championship.

Top six teams from 2013 EuroBasket – excluding Spain, as they have already qualified as hosts – will get their ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Cup. 24 European nations are participating at the ongoing event.
