2013 EuroBasket second round: Lithuania, Ukraine and France win on day 3

Lithuania, Ukraine and France won their respective matches on day three of the second round of the 38th edition of the FIBA Europe Basketball Championship for Men, better known as 2013 EuroBasket.

Following are the results of the Group E matches of day 3 of the second round:

Lithuania 86 – 67 Belgium

Lithuania defeated Belgium 86 – 67 in the first match of the day. Lithuania took the first three quarters 18 – 12, 26 – 9 and 25 – 14 respectively to lay the foundation for their win. Belgium tried to come back in the game by winning the last quarter 32 – 17, but it was too late to stop victory for Lithuania. Donatas Motiejunas was top scorer with 13 points for Lithuania, while Jonathan Tabu was top scorer for Belgium with 15 points. With the win, Lithuania are on top in group E while Belgium lie at the bottom of the table.

France 102 – 91 Latvia

In another match of the championship, France beat Latvia 102 – 91 to climb up to second spot in the group E standings. France took the first two quarters 31-15 and 21-20 respectively, while Latvia took the third quarter 30 – 24. Last quarter was a draw, with both teams scoring 26 points each but was enough for France to beat Latvia and climb up to second. Alexis Ajinca netted 25 points for France while Dairis Bertans top scored with 28 points for Latvia. With the loss, Latvia lie in fifth place in group E.

Ukraine 82 – 75 Serbia

Ukraine defeated Serbia 82 – 75 in the last match of the day. Despite the loss, Serbia are in third place in group E while Ukraine lie in fourth place. Serbia took the first quarter 21 – 18 while Ukraine took the second and third quarter 23 – 19 and 22 – 14 respectively. Serbia took the last quarter 21 – 19 but could not stop Ukraine from winning the match. Maxym Korniyenko netted 21 points for the winning side while Nemanja Bjelica scored 22 points for Serbia.

With the completion of the Day 3 of the second round of the championship, here is how the Group E standing looks like:

GROUP E

  1. Lithuania: 7 pts.
  2. France: 7 pts.
  3. Serbia: 7 pts.
  4. Ukraine: 6 pts.
  5. Latvia: 5 pts.
  6. Belgium: 4 pts.

There are 5 teams each in Group E and F in the second round of the 2013 EuroBasket. The top four teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals of the championship.

Top six teams from 2013 EuroBasket – excluding Spain, as they have already qualified as hosts – will get their ticket to the 2014 FIBA World Cup. 24 European nations are participating at the ongoing event.
