2013 FIBA Americas Championship (Day 3): Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and Puerto Rico win

Canada, Mexico, Venezuela and Puerto Rico won their respective matches on the Day 3 of the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Men held at Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela.

Brazil 62 – 91 Canada

Canada showed their true colours and was on fire against Brazil on the Group A encounter on the third day of the FIBA Americas Championship in Caracas.

Canada played an excellent level of basketball and were the better side throughout the match and crushed Brazil, 91-62. Point guard Cory Joseph netted game high 28 points for Canada.

But it was Brazil that took an early lead by taking the first quarter 22 – 19. After the first quarter, Canada came out strong and took the remaining quarters 25-12, 24-12 & 23-16 respectively to crush Brazil. Guilherme Giovannoni was the top scorer for Brazil with 11 points.

Mexico 87 – 65 Paraguay

In the second match of the Day 3 of the championship, Mexico easily beat Paraguay 87 – 65 to win its second match of the championship.

Mexico outclassed Paraguay in the first quarter 29 – 9. Mexico also took the second and third quarter 21 – 16 and 21 – 14 respectively.

Paraguay showed some resistance in the match by taking the fourth quarter 26 – 16 but it was too late to stop Mexico to win the match. Orlando Mendez was the top scorer for Mexico with 17 points. Paraguay’s top scorer was Ramon Sanchez with 15 points.

Venezuela 70 – 65 Dominican Republic

Hosts Venezuela entertained the home crowd in the Day 3 of the Championship by beating the favorites Dominican Republic 70 – 65. Venezuela was solid in defence as they ripped the Dominican Republic by taking the first three quarters of the match 20 – 12, 18 – 16 and 15 – 14 respectively.

Dominican Republic took the last quarter 23 – 17. Donta Smith had 19 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists for Hosts while Feldeine James was top scorer for Dominican Republic with 19 points.

With the win, Venezuela are now at top of the table of Group B.

Puerto Rico 93 – 69 Uruguay

One of the favorites to win the championship, Puerto Rico, thrashed Uruguay 93 – 69 to maintain its 100% winning streak in the 2013 edition of the FIBA Americas Basketball Championship for Men.

Puerto Rico showed no mercy to Uruguay as they took all quarters 29 – 18, 23 – 14, 26 – 23 & 15 – 14 respectively. Carlos Alberto and Alex Galindo were top scorer for Puerto Rico with 19 points each while Garcia Morales was top scorer for Uruguay with 17 points.

The 2013 FIBA Americas Championship is underway at Caracas, the capital city of Venezuela with 10 teams affiliated to the FIBA Americas sub zone fighting for the continental honors and most importantly, for the top four spot to qualify for the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
