Iran defeated hosts Philippines 85-71 to win Gold in the 2013 FIBA ASIA Basketball Championship for Men held at Manila, Philippines. It is Iran’s 3rd Asian championship in four appearances in the final while the Philippines settled for their 3rd silver medal in as many appearances in the final of the Asian Basketball Championship.
Iran took the first quarter 17 – 15 and the Philippines claimed the second quarter 19 – 18. Iran were leading by 36 – 33 at the halftime but the Philippines could not hold the unbeaten Iran in the third and fourth quarter of the match. Iran rallied to take the third and fourth quarter 17 – 19 & 23 – 18 to win the match 85 – 71. Hamed Hadadi of Iran scored 29 points for his team to win gold while J. William was top scored with 18 points for Philippines.

Meanwhile Korea earned a ticket to the SPAIN 2014 FIBA World Cup by beating the Chinese Taipei 75-57 at the 3rd place match of the championship. Korea also finished third in the 2011 FIBA Asia Championship, then at the expense of the Philippines, 70-68. Korea lead from the start of the match taking the first quarter 29-13 and were up by 50-29 at the half time. Third quarter score was 61-44 for Korea lead while the Koreans wrap up the match with impressive 75-57 points to earn ticket to SPAIN 2014 FIBA World Cup. Kim Mingoo led Korea with 21 points, four rebounds and three assists along with five three-pointers while Kim Joo-Sung and Cho Sung Min added 12 and 11, respectively for the Koreans. Lu Cheng-Ju was the highest scorer for Chinese Taipei with 13 points while naturalized player Quincy Davis III netted 12 points for Chinese Taipei.
So the three countries qualified from ASIA to the SPAIN 2014 FIBA World Cup will be Iran, Philippines and Korea.
Defending champions China ended their campaign with a 96-85 win over Qatar and settled fifth place at the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship for Men. Prior to this year’s championship, China had won 15 of the last 19 FIBA Asia Championships. China has the history of 15 golds, a silver and two bronze medals, for a total of 18 top-three finishes at the Asian Basketball Championship.
