24th FIBA Asia Champions Cup: Al Rayyan (Qatar) will face Foolad Mahan (Iran) in final

Al Rayyan (Qatar) will face Foolad Mahan (Iran) in the final of the ongoing 24th FIBA Asia Champions Cup at Amman, Jordan.

In the first semi-final of the championship, Al Rayyan (Qatar) defeated ASU (Jordan) 71-67 to enter the final. Al Rayyan took the first quarter 14-10 while they were up by 33-29 at the halftime break. After the break, ASU took the third quarter 18-16 but Al Rayyan took the last quarter 22-20 to seal victory. Watson Boney Harold top scored for Al Rayyan with 27 points while Al Sous Wesam netted 14 points for ASU.

In the second semi-final, Foolad Mahan (Iran) were too strong for Al Hala (Bahrain) as they won 121-73 to enter the final of the championship. The first quarter ended with the scores level with both teams scoring 23 points each. Foolad Mahan took the second quarter 27-22. At the end of the third quarter, Foolad Mahan were up 76-62. Foolad Mahan came out even stronger in the last quarter and took it 45-11 to outclass Al Hala. Jones Jonathan Bayra netted 21 points for Al Hala while Asselin Joshua Joseph also scored 21 points for Foolad Mahan.

The final of the championship will be played on September 21, 2013. The FIBA Asia Champions Cup, previously known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Champions Cup until 2002, is Asia’s premier club level basketball competition, involving the champion clubs of Asian countries.

It is organised by FIBA Asia and takes place once a year. A total of 10 professional basketball clubs qualify every year from the sub-zones of FIBA Asia. After Khas Bronchos (MGL) and San Miguel Beermen (PHI) pulled out of this year’s championship, only 8 clubs are participating in the 24th edition of Asia’a premier club level basketball competition.
