24th FIBA Asia Champions Cup: Foolad Mahan of Iran too strong for ONGC India

Foolad Mahan of Iran were too strong for ONGC India, the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) representative, in the ongoing 24th FIBA Asia Champions Cup at Amman, Jordan.

In the quarterfinal of the championship, ONGC India went down to the Iranian giant Foolad Mahan 56-104. Foolad Mahan took the first and second quarter 33-8 and 42-12 respectively while ONGC India took the third quarter 20-13. Foolad Mahan took the last quarter 17-16 to enter the semifinal of the championship. For Mahan, M. Kamrani and J. Asselin netted 20 points while S. Becirovic scored 16 points. Vishesh Bhriguvanshi top scored with 20 points for ONGC India while Amrit Pal Singh also added 17 points.

In the other quarterfinals of the championship, Al Rayyan of Qatar defeated Al Jaish of Syria 82-71, Al Hala of Bahrain defeated Duhok of Iraq 103-99 and ASU of Jordan defeated BC Kapshagay of Kazakhstan 101-78 to enter the semifinals of the championship.

Al Rayyan (Qatar) will face ASU (Jordan) while Al Hala (Bahrain) will play Foolad Mahan (Iran) in the semifinals of the championship. ONGC India will play Duhok (Iraq) in the 5-8th place game of the championship.

The FIBA Asia Champions Cup, previously known as the Asian Basketball Confederation (ABC) Champions Cup until 2002, is Asia’s premier club level basketball competition, involving the champion clubs of Asian countries.

It is organised by FIBA Asia and takes place once a year. A total of 10 professional basketball clubs qualify every year from the sub-zones of FIBA Asia. After Khas Bronchos (MGL) and San Miguel Beermen (PHI) pulled out of this year’s championship, only 8 clubs are participating in the 24th edition of Asia’a premier club level basketball competition.
