NBA: Ranking the current brother combos

Dallas Mavericks v Golden State Warriors
Seth and Stephen Curry

Sibling rivalry arises when children in the same family pursue similar interests and goals. It is particularly intense when children are very close in age and of the same gender and/or where one or both children are intellectually gifted.

It is no surprise that siblings will venture into the same professional field, based on the above explanation. From the Wilkins and Barry brothers of the past, the NBA will never lack siblings playing in the same era and rarely same team.

While some are twins, some have been teammates and others are all-stars, we look at the players that prove talent sometimes runs in the family. career accomplishments and individual success have all been considered when comprising this list.

#8 Jerian and Jerami Grant

Jerian and Jerami are yet to make their mark in the league. They are the sons of Harvey Grant (played for 11 years in the NBA with Washington Bullets/Wizards, Portland Trailblazers, and the Philadelphia 76ers), the twin brother of Horace Grant (four-time NBA champion with the Chicago Bulls and the Los Angeles Lakers).

Jerian is a point guard for the Chicago Bulls, while the younger Jerami is a power forward for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Their young careers are still promising, and with proper tutelage, they can become solid role players who could have a long NBA career.

#7 Tyler and Cody Zeller

Tyler is playing for the Brooklyn Nets, while Cody plays for the Charlotte Hornets. Their older brother Luke Zeller last played for the Phoenix Suns in 2013 before being waived. They are the nephews of former NBA player Al Eberhard.

Cody is enjoying better stability in Charlotte compared to his older brother who has been a journeyman. They both had stellar college careers that is yet to transcend to their NBA careers. Cody still has time to develop his game.

#6 Justin and Jrue Holiday

Jrue and Justin Holiday
Jrue and Justin Holiday

Jrue Holiday played four seasons with Philadelphia and was named an NBA All-Star in 2013. The following season in 2013–14, he was traded to the Pelicans where he remains to date. He remains a key part of the Pelicans' future contending plans.

Justin, on the other hand, is a role player and has been a journeyman in the league after going undrafted in the 2011 NBA draft. He won an NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors in 2015. He currently plays for the Chicago Bulls.

Justin is older, though Jrue is the better player. Jrue is currently penciled in as the starting shooting guard for the Pelicans, so his minutes will never be in question. For Justin, it all depends on the direction the Bulls franchise will decide to take since they are rebuilding.

#5 Mason, Miles, and Marshall Plumlee

Mason, Miles and Marshall Plumlee

The Plumlee brothers all played college basketball at Duke University.

While Mason and Miles are freak athletes, Marshall has not really gotten a chance to show what he’s capable of in the NBA. Marshall plays for the Agua Caliente Clippers of the NBA G League after limitedly featuring for the New York Knicks last season.

Miles, on the other hand, has been a journeyman in his short NBA career so far and is currently playing for the Erie BayHawks of the NBA G League, on assignment from the Atlanta Hawks.

Mason has had a more stable career and is currently a member of the Denver Nuggets. He was recently made a starter owing to Paul Millsap’s injury.

#4 Marcus and Markieff Morris

The Morris brothers are identical twins that evidently love each other a lot. They are the second set of twins in NBA history to play for the same team- Phoenix Suns.

It is believed that the Sun’s move to acquire Marcus was made, in part, to repress the brothers' anxieties over being apart from each other. They recently got into trouble with the authorities together but were found not guilty of assault.

Their career development is currently at par with each other. Marcus plays for the Boston Celtics while Markieff is a member of the Washington Wizards. It will be interesting to see how their friendship will be tested this season considering the potential rivalry developing between the Celtics and the Wizards.

#3 Brook and Robin Lopez

Brooke and Robin Lopez
Brooke and Robin Lopez

Brook and Robin are twins who played together all their lives before turning pro. They played together at Stanford University for two years before entering the NBA Draft in 2008. Robin was drafted 10th overall by the Brooklyn Nets (then New Jersey Nets) while his brother was drafted 15th by the Phoenix Suns.

Brook’s style of play is the complete antithesis of Robin’s. He has made his name primarily on the offensive end of the spectrum while Robin excels on the defensive end as a paint protector and tenacious rebounder.

Brooke is currently with the Los Angeles Lakers while Robin plays for the Chicago Bulls. Generally, Brooke is the better player with one all-star selection, but depending on team needs, Robin can be as valuable to his team when he’s not fighting mascots.

#2 Steph and Seth Curry

Steph is an established global superstar and a perennial All-Star. At this point, it will take more than a miracle for Seth to outshine his older brother’s outstanding career. Their playing style is similar and most certainly modeled around their father’s (Dell Curry).

Steph is uniquely a gifted player for the Golden State Warriors. He is a two-time league MVP, two-time NBA champion, four-time NBA All-Star, a former NBA scoring champion and four-time all-NBA team selection among other accolades.

Seth on the other hand just found his footing with the Dallas Mavericks and is currently sidelined with a season-ending injury. He went undrafted in the 2013 NBA draft despite displaying an elite scoring ability at Duke.

#1 Marc and Pau Gasol

Marc defending Pau Gasol

Marc and Pau play for the Memphis Grizzlies and the San Antonio Spurs respectively. After Pau was traded to the Lakers in 2008, one of the second round picks the Lakers dealt with the Grizzlies resulted in the rights to Marc Gasol.

Marc made the trade less lopsided by his steady development and finally emerging from his older brother’s shadow to become a superstar in his own right. With the Grizzlies, he won the NBA Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2013 and is a two-time All-NBA Team member and a three-time NBA All-Star.

Pau, on the other hand, made the most of the trade to the Lakers and helped them win two championships while making 3 all-star appearances. He is a six-time NBA All-Star, and a four-time All-NBA selection, twice on the second team and twice on the third team.

Together they have been regular members of the Spanish national basketball. They have won two Olympic silver medals, a FIBA Basketball World Cup title, and two EuroBasket titles. They made Spain a threat to Team USA at the international stage.
