Australia and Canada, after wins over Spain and Greece, respectively, look to take solo leadership of Group A on Tuesday. The winner takes a step closer to a quarterfinal seat because only the top two teams can advance. After the impressive victories, basketball fans cannot wait to see them go head-to-head.

The Aussies proved that their pre-Olympic form was no fluke. They raced to a big lead over Spain before holding on for a 92-80 win. Josh Giddey had the game on a string, particularly in the first quarter when he could not do anything wrong. Patty Mills had another superb night closing the game for the Boomers.

Meanwhile, the Canadians survived Giannis Antetokounmpo’s one-man onslaught to escape with an 86-79 victory. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander showed why he was considered by many to be the real NBA MVP winner over Nikola Jokic last season. The OKC Thunder superstar’s timely hits late in the game pushed the North American team to the finish line.

The Australians’ fast start was authored by Josh Giddey and Patty Mills. They had plenty of help from Nick Kay, Dyson Daniels and Jock Landale. Brian Goorjian is not likely to change that starting five after their Olympic opening performance.

Giddey will once again be crucial to the Aussies’ success. He is the one that makes the offense hum. Dante Exum will also have his hand in holding the fort if the Chicago Bulls guard takes a breather. Goorjian’s group will be tough to beat if Patty Mills turns to “FIBA Patty” versus their opponents on Tuesday.

Canada starting 5 and depth chart

Canada is stacked from top to bottom. After Team USA, they have the roster with the most NBA talent. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is the head of the snake, but Jamal Murray can also be as deadly.

Jordi Fernandez can deploy Lu Dort to hound Josh Giddey to slow down the Boomer. Dort and Giddey were former longtime teammates in Oklahoma, so they are very familiar with each other's game. It will be an interesting sub-plot in the game.

RJ Barrett, Dillon Brooks and Dwight Powell will join Dort and “SGA” in the starting lineup.

Australia vs Canada: Key matchups

Dyson Daniels vs Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander terrorized the New Orleans Pelicans defense in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. Dyson Daniels had a front-row ticket to the OKC Thunder superstar’s impressive postseason. From the NBA, they will be taking their battle to the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Daniels and every Pelican defender struggled to stop “SGA.” It remains to be seen if he can do better this time as Australia's first designated defender against Canada's best player.

Lu Dort vs. Josh Giddey

Josh Giddey has always raved about Lu Dort’s defense. The Aussie will be on the receiving end of that tenacious, physical and unforgiving defense on Tuesday. If the “Dorture Chamber” can slow down his former Thunder teammate, the Boomers will be in serious trouble.
