FIBA Asia/Oceania Group B: Philippines 77, Japan 71

Tokyo, JAPAN -- The Philippines held off a spirited Japanese comeback in Tokyo with a 77-71 win in Group B in the Asia/Oceania region in the World Cup 2019 qualifiers. Jayson Castro William led the Philippines in scoring with 20 points. Andray Maurice Blatche pulled down a double-double for the Philipino squad with 13 points and 12 rebounds.

For Japan, Ira Brown picked up his own double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. The Philippines' next game is against Chinese Taipei while Japan take on Australia on the same day.

Jason Cadee scored 16 points for the Aussies while Quincy Spenser Davis III led Chinese Taipei in scoring (17), rebounds (7), steals (4) and blocks (2). Australia had the game well in control from the beginning while Chinese Taipei suffered from the three-point range, shooting 26%. Australia's next game is against sports rivals Japan while Chinese Taipei take on the Philippines in their next game.

Doha, QATAR -- Anton Ponomarev scored 23 points in an 82-70 victory for Kazakhstan over Qatar in FIBA World Cup 2019 qualifying. Kazakhstan pulled away after Qatar led by 3 at the half.

Qatar's Adbulraman Saad led his team with 20 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists in the loss. Qatar's terrible free throw shooting (46%) also proved to be a contributing factor in the loss. Kazakhstan's next game is against Iraq while Qatar face Iran in their next game.

Amman, JORDAN-- In an evenly contested match between border rivals, Iraq pulled away from the Islamic Republic of Iran, winning 74-66. Demario Aquan Mayfield of Iraq pulled off a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds in the victory over the Iranians.

Farid Aslani led Iran with 16 points in the loss. Iraq's next game is against Kazakhstan while Iran face off against Qatar.

Luanda, ANGOLA -- In a game highlighted by terrible shooting, Egypt held off the team from DR Congo 65-61 in overtime. Ramy Guandy led the Egyptians in scoring with 18 points while Maxi Munaga led DR Congo with 19 points.

DR Congo's next game will be against Morocco while Egypt face off against African rival Angola.

FIBA Africa Group A: Tunisia 96, Guinea 56

Yaoundé, Cameroon-- Tunisia routed Guinea in a 40-point blowout. Nizar Knioua led Tunisian scorers with 16 points in the decisive victory. Their defence held Guinea to 18 or fewer points per quarter. Tunisia's bad free throw shooting (50%) was made up by their good three-point shooting (42%). Mohammad Souare led Guinea with 14 points in the loss, but the team only managed to shoot 13% from behind the arc. Tunisia's next game is against Chad while Guinea take on Cameroon in their next game.

FIBA Africa Group C: Angola 62, Morocco 56

Luanda, Angola -- Angola's Leonel Paulo and Carlos Morais scored 13 points each for the Angolans in a win over Morocco in Group C in Luanda, Angola. Adil El Makssoud scored 14 points in the losing effort.

Both teams were even in defensive rebounds with 21. Angola's next game in the group is against Egypt while Morocco face DR Congo in their next game.

FIBA Africa Group A: Cameroon 65, Chad 60

Yaoundé, CAMEROON -- Kenneth Kadji of Cameroon pulled down a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 65-60 win over Chad in the African qualifiers for the FIBA World Cup 2019. Chad's Placide Nakidjim took down a double-double of his own with 15 points and 14 rebounds in the loss.

Both teams combined 9 for 63 from behind the arc. Luckily, that wasn't the difference in the game. Cameroon's next game is against Guinea while Chad take on Tunisia.

Tel Aviv, ISRAEL-- The Israeli team, led by Richard Howell's 19 points, pulled away after an even first quarter, winning 88-68 against Estonia. Rain Veideman led Estonia in points (14), rebounds (6), assists (5) and steals (4), but it wasn't enough. Estonia's bad three-point shooting proved to be the downfall, going 9 for 38 from behind the arc. Israel's next game is against Greece while Estonia take on Great Britain.

Bursa, TURKEY-- Zanis Pieners' 25 points and 6 rebounds weren't enough to guide Latvia as they lost in the first game of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers to Turkey 85-73. Turkey's 42% three-point shooting was enough to hold off the Latvians.

Melih Mahmutoglu led Turkey with 24 points. The Turkish squad were able to produce 12 steals.

Turkey's next game in the group is against Ukraine while Latvia face off against Sweden.

Botevgrad, BULGARIA-- A close game between two European giants ended with the Bulgarians losing 82-80 to Finland at home. Jamar Wilson led the Finnish team with 20 points. Bulgaria's three-point shooting wasn't up to the mark, going only 5 for 18 from downtown against Finland's 14 for 31.

Bulgaria's leading scorer was Stanimir Marinov with 18 points. Bulgaria's next game is against Iceland while Finland take on the Czech Republic.

Pardubice, CZECH REPUBLIC-- Jaromir Bohacik's 20 points for the Czechs helped them in their win against Iceland at home. Iceland were led by Martin Hermannsson, who had 29 points in the loss in the FIBA World Cup qualifier European region.

Iceland's horrific three-point shooting (17%) proved to be fatal in the 20-point loss to the Czechs. The Czechs avoided fouling the Icelandic squad because of Iceland's 96% free throw shooting.

Czech Republic's next game is against Finland while Iceland take on Bulgaria.

Bydgoszcz, Poland -- Poland's Mateusz Ponitka's 17 points and 7 rebounds proved to be effective against a Hungarian defence, winning the game for the Polish squad 70-60 in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in the European region.

Hungary's leading scorer was Zoltan Perl with 18 points, but that wasn't enough to close the 10-point gap between the two teams. The Polish team were better at passing the ball, notching 17 assists, compared to Hungary's 8. Poland's next game is against Lithuania while Hungary face off against newcomers Kosovo.

FIBA Europe Group E: Bosnia-Herzegovina 81, Russia 76

Sarajevo, BOSNIA -- Vitaly Fridzon's 25 points weren't enough for Russia to pull off the win against Bosnia-Herzegovina, with the Bosnians winning 81-76. Bosnia was lead by Dzanan Musa's 18 points and 7 rebounds. The nail in the coffin was a free throw attempt missed by Amar Gegic (BIH) with six seconds to go in the game, only for it to be rebounded by teammate Aleksandar Lazic. He was fouled by Russia, effectively sealing the win for Bosnia. Bosnia-Herzegovina's next game is against France while Russia face off against Belgium in Group E.

Norrkoping, SWEDEN -- Christopher Czerapowicz's 26 points weren't enough for Sweden as they fell to Ukraine at home, 84-76, in the FIBA World Cup qualifier in the Europe region. Viacheslav Kravtsov's 17 points for the Ukrainians were all they needed for the win. Ukraine outscored Sweden in the paint 32-20. Their shooting inside the three-point arc was a good 52%. Sweden's Anton Gaddefors led the game in rebounds (9) and assists (5).

Their next game is against Latvia while Ukraine face off against European superpowers Turkey.

FIBA Europe Group C: Lithuania 99, Kosovo 61

Prishtina, KOSOVO -- Newcomers Kosovo fell to an experienced Lithuanian squad by 38 points in their first-ever FIBA World Cup qualification attempt. Dardan Berisha led the Kosovo team with 19 points and 5 assists while Lithuania's Adas Juskevicius scored 16 points. Lithuania outrebounded Kosovo 51-24 and out-assisted them 26-9.

Lithuania's next game is against Poland while Kosovo continue their maiden voyage in international competitions by facing Hungary.

FIBA Europe Group G: Germany 79, Georgia 70

Chemnitz, GERMANY -- Germany started their road to the FIBA World Cup with a qualification win over the Republic of Georgia 79-70. Robin Benzing led the game for the German team with 25 points.

Michael Dixon led Georgia with 23 points and 5 assists. Georgia's shooting inside the arc proved to be a fatal flaw against the German defence, managing only 29% inside of the three-point line. Both teams were even from outside of the arc, shooting 47% each. Germany's next game is against Austria while Georgia face off against European powerhouse Serbia in Group G action.

Podgorica, MONTENEGRO -- Spain fended off an attempt at a comeback from Montenegro with a 13 point win in Group A. Colom Barrufet led the Spanish team with 15 points and 4 assists. Montenegro were led by Ivanovic's 10 points and 8 assists in the loss.

Spain's next game is against Slovenia while Montenegro will face off against Belarus in their next game.

The game was tightly contested until the last few minutes. Croatia struggled at the three-point line with 24% shooting while the Netherlands took advantage with their dominance on the fast break. The Netherlands face off against Romania while Croatia take on Italy in their next.

Belgrade, SERBIA -- Ivan Paunic of Serbia scored 16 points and collected 8 rebounds in a 21 point victory in Group G action against Austria. Rasid Mahalbasic scored 15 points for the Austrian side.

Serbia's 11 for 22 three-point shooting proved to be dominant against the Austrian defence, while Austria shot 31% from behind the arc. Serbia's next game is against the Republic of Georgia while Germany take on rivals Austria in their next game.

Torino, ITALY -- Romania's comeback attempt failed in the fourth quarter as they succumbed to a 75-70 loss to the Italian team. Della Valle led Italy with 16 points while Romania's leading scorer was Cate with 16 points and 8 rebounds.

Italy's next game is against Croatia while Romania take on the Netherlands in Group D action in the FIBA World Cup qualifiers in the European region.

Despite shooting 23% from behind the arc, their 62% from inside the arc proved to be key in their win. Slovenia's next game in the group is against powerhouse Spain while Belarus take on Montenegro.

Canada's next game is against Dominican Republic while Bahamas take on Caribbean rivals US Virgin Islands.
