Indian team disappoints

East Asia’s domination in the Asian women’s basketball continued as all East Asian teams; China, Korea, Japan and Chinese Taipei, enter the semifinal of the 22nd FIBA ASIA U18 Championship for women at Jordan. Korea handed India its fifth defeat in a row in the tournament. In the last day of the preliminary round, Korea defeated India 90 – 77. Korea took the first three-quarters 29 – 26, 23 – 14 and 17 – 10 respectively. Despite India taking the last quarter 27 – 21, it was not enough to stop mighty Koreans from victory.

India will now take on Malaysia (top team from level 2) for the level 1 playoff with winner to play in level in the next FIBA ASIA U18 Championship for women.

In the other level one match of day five, Chinese Taipei beat Thailand 87 – 49 to enter semifinal of the championship. Meanwhile, China defeated Japan 80 – 64 to finish top of table in level one of the championship.

In level two match of the championship, Malaysia beat Hong Kong 64 – 46 to top level two and set date with India for the Level 1 playoff. Hong Kong will also play playoff after it finished in second position in Level two. Hong Kong will play Thailand in the level 1 playoff match. In the other level 2 matches, Kazakhstan beat Kyrgyzstan 81 – 35 and Sri Lanka beat Jordan 54- 24.

22nd FIBA ASIA U18 Championship for women is played in two levels. Elite level one consists of six teams – China, India, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Chinese Taipei while six other teams – Hong Kong, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia and Sri Lanka – will play in Qualifying Level II with the top two teams having a shot at qualifying for next edition’s Level I competition.

The 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women is the qualifying event for the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women to be played in Russia. The top three teams from the 22nd FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Women will represent FIBA Asia at the 2015 FIBA U19 World Championship for Women.
