FIBA Asia U16 Championship [2nd round]: China thrash Malaysia

Defending champions China thrashed Malaysia 119-52 in the ongoing FIBA Asia U16 Championship for Men at Tehran, Iran.

Two-time defending champions China are in hunt for their third back-to-back title and Malaysia were no match to the Asian basketball giants as China dominated the entire match taking all the quarters 30-16, 33-14, 32-11 and 24-11 respectively to thrash Malaysia.

In the other match, Philippines defeated Jordan 73-60. Philippines took the first two quarters 17-14 and 26-17 respectively while Jordan tried to come back to the match by taking the third quarter 19-15. But Philippines came out strong in the last quarter and won it by 19-15 to seal a convincing victory.

In another match of the day, Bahrain defeated Korea 82-79 in a tight contest. First quarter was a tie with both teams scoring 23 points each while Bahrain took the second quarter 22-13 to take 9 point lead going into the halftime break. After the break, Bahrain took the third quarter 18-15 to go to the last quarter with a 12-point lead. Despite Korea winning the last quarter 28-19, it didn’t stop the West Asian giants from wining the match.

Meanwhile, Japan eased past Kazakhstan 94-74 in another second round match of the championship. Japan dismantled Kazakhstan in the first quarter by taking the first quarter 33-9 while Kazakhstan took the second quarter 28-23. The third quarter was tied with both teams scoring 18 points each while Japan took the last quarter 20-19 to win the match.

India will take on Chinese Taipei and Syria will take on Iran in the remaining matches of day 1 action of the second round of the championship.

The top three teams from the 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship will represent FIBA Asia in the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship to be played in Dubai (UAE) from August 7-17, 2014.

China won gold medals in the first two editions of the FIBA Asia U16 Championship.
