The reigning world champions Germany began their 2024 Paris Olympics campaign against Japan at the Pierre Mauroy Stadium in Lille, France on Saturday. Germany started the game with Dennis Schroder, Franz Wagner, Andreas Obst, Johannes Voigtmann and Daniel Theis. Japan fielded a starting lineup of Rui Hachimura, Yuta Watanabe, Yuki Kawamura, Josh Hawkinson and Hirotaka Yoshii.Germany came out clicking on all cylinders with Schroder orchestrating the offense and Theis dominating on the glass. Theis found stroke from the 3-point range and knocked down his first two shots from beyond the arc.Japan struggled to get their offense going as Germany were excellent with their coverages and restricted the Asian side to one shot on majority of the possessions.After trailing 8-16, Japan neded a mini-scoring burst. Yuta Watanabe came up big and made two huge shots from deep as Japan ended the first quarter on a high.In the second quarter, Japan came out with incredible energy and played with urgency on both ends of the floor. Rui Hacimura unleashed a vicious dunk and the momentum seemed to be firmly with Japan.Germany bounced back and imposed their will on the game. Japan's good start to the quarter was undone in just a couple of minutes as Germany stretched their lead to 14 points with just over four minutes to play in the period.The first half ended with Germany leading Japan 52-44. Franz Wagner was the leading scorer for Germany at the half time with 11 points while Watanabe led all scorers with 13 points.Germany extended their lead after the half time as Schroder and Wagner kept the team's offense flowing. The duo accounted for 13 of Germany's 22 points in the third quarter. For Japan, Hachimura dropped 10 points in the quarter but despite the LA Lakers star's burst, Japan lost the quarter 17-22. Germany gained their biggest lead of the game and jumped to an 83-64 lead with seven minutes remaining in the game. The reigning world champions had answers to whatever Japan threw at them and ultimately registered a convincing 97-77 victory.Orlando Magic's young star Franz Wagner was leading scorer for Germany as he dropped 22 points. Hachimura led Japan in scoring with 20 points.
