Jeff Van Gundy is the best commentator in NBA

Coach turned commentator, Jeff Van Gundy.

I have no idea what’s good or what’s bad [on a broadcast], and that’s why I don’t try to over think it too much. I just say what I think. Sometimes that gets me in trouble.”

Coach turned commentator, Jeff Van Gundy.

What makes a colour commentator so good that you want to switch live stream channels until you find the one where he is on? Is it about their voice? Is it about what they have to say? How they say it? What makes me want to hunt down matches, which are being covered by Jeff Van Gundy? Well for one, he speaks his mind. He calls a spade a spade and calls it to its face.

Jeff Van Gundy is hands down the best commentator in basketball. He speaks his mind and doesn’t just sprout hyperbole like Charles Barkley. If he proclaims something, he backs it up with reasoning. And he’s one of the funniest commentators around.

“Did you see the defense he just had on him? You do that in New York and you’re spending a few days in jail!”- JVG

Once, Jeff was complaining about the NBA league pass price and how it should be reduced because of the lockout. Jeff is not one to stand idly by and go along with what the norm is. He will question everything. The salary of the NBA commissioner, competency of coaches and players, fans, rules, there’s no subject which is out of bounds for this coach turned commentator.

And in the midst of his insightful critique, he will even launch into a rap song:

When he’s pissed, he’s gonna let you know about it. This season the NBA has cracked down on flopping. I like to think that Van Gundy’s tirades against flopping had a part to play in it.

“There’s got to be earlier help, when Durant is guarding him, Miami has not shotten the ball well from the perimeter, shotten? Did I just say shotten? Is that even a word? How about shot? Okay I’m going to go back to school but they got to make sure they plug those driving gaps…”- JVG

Mike Breen: “You know you’re not going to be able to win the twitter award unless you open up a twitter account.”Jeff Van Gundy: “I think I can sleep at night knowing that I have not joined the twitter world.”

During the Thunder-Mavericks playoff series he dropped these gems:

“If I’m Serge Ibaka,I’m naming my first son Dirk”- JVG

” Can we just speed this up and count this as 2″ , Van Gundy said as Dirk was about to shoot free throws.

“They should be having a national holiday in Germany right now.” - JVG

Here, Van Gundy gives us his own version of All-Star weekend rules:

Hear him talking about how he doesn’t have to mince his words now that he’s not a coach and is a commentator:

Even dumb fans aren’t immune to him:

He even trash talks with Kobe:

Here he is calling the fans soft for not trying to save Wade and instead getting out of his way:

As a coach there’s a lot you think of but can never say. You have to be diplomatic or you will be fined or fired. A coach who has festered his frustration quietly and nursed it and is now let loose as a commentator, that’s a fan’s dream come true. Today, Jeff Van Gundy is the best commentator in the NBA, and there’s nobody within touching distance.
