Kobe Bryant tributes on his death anniversary are tone-deaf, whitewash his problematic history

LA Lakers great Kobe Bryant passed away in 2020.

Three years ago today, the NBA world was shaken by the tragic news of Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna. The two were involved in a helicopter crash that killed everyone onboard.

As the years go by, people continue to honor the LA Lakers legend. Players pay homage by continuing to wear his sneakers, and the league named the All-Star MVP award after him.

While many will continue to show love for Kobe Bryant following his tragic death, some have a different point of view. Because of his questionable past, they feel he is not the best choice for a role model.

Kobe Bryant has a problematic past

Back in 2003, Kobe found himself in the middle of a sexual assault scandal. A woman in Colorado accused the LA Lakers star of sexual misconduct while staying at a hotel in the area.

Kobe admitted to having sex with the accuser, but stood firm that everything was consensual. It's worth noting that he was already married to his wife, Vanessa, at the time.

The case caused a major media frenzy, but no criminal charges were ever put against Kobe. In the end, both parties settled things outside of court. While Kobe was never found guilty of anything, the incident did cost him countless sponsorship deals. On top of that, it took years for his reputation to recover.

Kobe Bryant is still a great role model

Contrary to what some critics might think, this situation should not make Kobe Bryant a poor role model. He owned up to his wrongdoings, complied with authorities throughout the process, and was never found guilty of any crimes.

Instead of harping on one mistake, people should judge Kobe over the entirety of his life. Especially when it comes to the NBA. He gave everything he had to the sport from a young age because he loved it. Kobe worked relentlessly to improve his craft and become the best version of himself.

When it comes to hard work, most people go to Kobe for inspiration. Seeing that he is proof of what putting in extra time can do for you, he is a great role model for kids and young adults.

On top of his work on the court, Kobe also led a good example off the floor. He was a loving husband and father, and was a big philanthropist. Despite what some might think is a checkered past, Kobe Bryant was a fine role model and source of inspiration for many.
