The Dallas Mavericks (22-19) ripped off a season-best six-game winning streak before falling 108-85 at the New York Knicks on Wednesday. That surge has them fifth in the West. They had suffered a 7-14 swoon between mid-November and late December after a 9-4 start.

Fourth-year guard Jalen Brunson continues to shine as one of the NBA's most valuable bench assets. The Dallas guard has been a consistent force. The "Brunson Burner" has done a great job running the team and producing across the board. In his last week of games, Brunson averaged 15.0 points and 5.5 assists per game while shooting 50.0%.

The Miami Heat have weaved their way around lengthy injuries to headliners Jimmy Butler and Bam Adebayo to move into a tie with Brooklyn for second place in the East. Butler (ankle) has missed 18 games this year, and Adebayo (thumb surgery) has been out the past 20 games.

Nonetheless, the Heat have won three in a row and 16 of their last 20 games. Underpinning that recent surge has, as usual, been the play of Tyler Herro.

The sharpshooting guard is the frontrunner for the Sixth Man of the Year award. "Boy Wonder" is coming off another impressive week. This latest stretch saw him finish with averages of 22.3 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. With Butler and Adebayo expected to return soon, it's only going to make life easier for Herro, who could see his efficiency climb.
