Bill Walton dropped derogatory slur while on mic at Pac-12 game (USC v UCLA)

Hall of Famer Bill Walton found himself in hot water this week while commentating during a Pac-12 game. The veteran big man was calling a game between Arizona State and USC when he made a controversial comment regarding the arena's announcer/host:

"He does not need a little chair because he is a giant in a world full of shriveling mid**ts."

Without missing a beat, Walton turned to his broadcast partner and dropped the term again, saying:

"Speaking of shriveling mid**ts, what is your name again?"

The crack didn't go over well with Dave Pasch, his broadcast partner, who asked what was wrong with Walton. While the situation was already awkward enough, Walton deflected by saying that he was guilty of having fun in Las Vegas. The head-scratcher of a comment was met with more confusion from Pasch, who replied:

"I don't know what you consumed at halftime."

Bill Walton’s past controversies

Of course, this isn’t the first time Bill Walton has found himself in the headlines for controversy. Back in March of 2021, almost two years ago to date, Walton called Oregon State’s Jarod Lucas a “giant among shriveling midgets.” At the time, the comment wasn’t very well received either.

In addition, fans pulled the receipts on Walton from 2019, where he was quoted as saying that Arizona President Robert C. Robbins was a “giant among shriveling midgets”. Yet, somehow, fans were able to pull receipts from three years BEFORE that!

Back in March of 2016, Walton was quoted as using the phrase “a man amongst shriveling midgets”. At the time, nobody could have predicted that the phrase would become one frequently used by Walton.

In addition, back in 2016, the phrase may not have brought the same criticism upon the Hall of Famer as it is today. So far there’s been no word on whether or not Walton will face repercussion for the comments.

While Walton has never been one to hold his tongue in the past, and has often found himself fielding criticism as a result of his comments, many may be growing tired of his antics. In an op-ed written back in January he criticized California’s homeless problem, comparing the individuals to walking zombies. The comments, unsurprisingly, resulted in Walton fielding heavy criticism.

Will his latest use of the term “shriveling midgets” wind up seeing him removed from broadcasting duties before next season? Below you can see a video of his controversial comments regarding the homeless.
