The NBA 2K franchise welcomed Bronny James and the 2024 rookies to its annual release of player ratings for the uber-popular video game. Unlike any other year, the second-rounders have been under more scrutiny because of LeBron James’ eldest son. The LA Lakers took the former Trojan with their No. 55 pick.

The first team to draft in the second round this year was the Toronto Raptors (No. 31) who grabbed Jonathan Mogbo out of San Francisco. However, the Visual Concepts game does not strictly follow the draft order in determining player rankings. Mogbo earned a 69 overall rating but Utah’s Kyle Filipowski (No. 32), nailed a 70.

Video game enthusiasts interested in using Bronny James will have to deal with his 68 overall rating. He and 16 other rookies share the same grade, the lowest in their class. For reference, Zaccharie Risacher and Alexandre Sarr, the top two picks in this year’s draft, got 75s, the highest among rookies.

The player ratings are based on players’ performances before entering the NBA and where they landed in the draft. Only time will tell, though, if the players are graded too high, too low, or just about right. Once the season plays out, gamers will have a definite idea who among the rookies was given reasonable or unfair ratings.

Bronny James said wanted a “respectable 80-81” NBA 2K25 rating

Bronny James had the spotlight in the NBA Draft combine despite being a projected second-round pick. He had more media coverage than players who were expected to land in the lottery. Sometime during the event in New York, he was asked by Bleacher Report about what he would want his NBA 2K25 rating to be.

James Jr., who knew the player rankings would eventually come out, gamely answered:

“I feel I deserve a respectable 80-81.”

When his father LeBron James debuted in NBA 2K 4, the high school phenom got a 78 OVR. Victor Wembanyama, considered to be the next generational talent after “King James” had an 84 OVR. Last year’s No. 2 pick Brandon Miller was the second-best among rookies after “Wemby” with 78.

Paolo Banchero, the top pick in 2022, couldn’t also crack the 80 OVR. Like many past rookies, he got a 78. Bronny James has to play exceptionally well for gamers to be convinced the creators of NBA 2K25 got their ratings wrong for him.
