Detroit Pistons star guard Cade Cunningham will undergo season-ending surgery to fix his left shin. The injury has bothered him since the beginning of November, which has caused him to miss 17 games this season.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Cunningham is expected to make a complete recovery before the training camp of the 2023-24 season. Based on earlier reports, the Pistons assessed that the injury was a "hairline stress fracture in his shin." However, due to him getting season-ending surgery, it appears to be more serious.

The organization initially thought that the guard would only miss a "significant amount" of time. However, recent developments have given the public a better perspective of what Cunningham's injury really is. During an update, The Athletic's Shams Charania said this about Cunningham's situation.

"They’re really looking at him resting for an indefinite period of time or undergoing surgery that would sideline him for a significant amount of this season…" Charania said.

Cunningham is an extremely talented player in the NBA. Among the young stars in the league, he's one of the few who stands out. However, one issue that could hold him back is his durability. In his first two seasons, he's shown how inconsistently unavailable he's been.

In his rookie season, Cunningham only played 64 games. However, he did average decent numbers and was able to showcase his talent to the rest of the NBA. The former top overall pick averaged 17.4 points, 5.5 rebounds and 5.6 assists in his first year in the league.

Now in his sophomore season, he's increased his production on the floor. Due to serious injuries, he won't be able to show off his all-out play this season. In games, Cunningham averaged 19.9 points, 6.2 rebounds and six assists.

While his talent is unmatched, Cunningham's durability could cost him his career down the line. For him to last in the NBA, he needs to learn how to stay healthy and available.
