DeMarcus Cousins reveals his top 5 point guards in NBA ever, rebuking a popular choice: “I'm not really understanding why”

There is always debate among NBA fans about who is the best at a particular position or who is the best all-time. In basketball, the point guard position is important because that’s man who makes everything go. The point guard is like the quarterback in football. Some are more highly regarded than others.

NBA veteran DeMarcus Cousins shared his views on the all-time top guards. It wasn't too much about who was in his top five but who gets placed in a lot of top five rankings. He believes that the Phoenix Suns’ Chris Paul is not at the top of his all-time rankings of the position group.

"I'm not really understanding why. Not knock to CP, but strictly from an accolade and performance standpoint, I don't think CP3 is top 5," Cousins said.

Other members of the show brought up the usual guys who are on the list, such as Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas and Steph Curry. But Cousins had a few others to add to the list: Steve Nash, John Stockton, Russell Westbrook and Rajon Rondo.

Cousins only named four and would need one more to round out the five, but he can take anyone from the previously named guards.

Rondo is a two-time NBA champion, Nash and Westbrook have both been league MVPs and Stockton is the all-time leader in assists. It would hard for Chris Paul to get any of those accomplishments before he retires, which won’t be long considering his age.

Magic Johnson may be the only point guard who will make almost everyone’s list. Steph Curry has put up a resume with two MVPs and four NBA titles that puts him ahead of most players. Thomas was a two-time champion and a Finals MVP in an era when small guards were not that dominant. When comparing all-time greats, it's hard to find a wrong answer.

Will DeMarcus Cousins get signed?

Of the available free agents, DeMarcus Cousins is one of the more notable names out there. He is a four-time All-Star and can still play some good basketball. Although due to injuries, he is not as dominant as he once was, he could still contribute to a team trying to compete.

Cousins was last in the league during the 2021-22 season with the Denver Nuggets. The big man played in 31 games, averaging 8.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game. There are a few teams that could use his inside presence.
